Injection Molding Tool Maker and CNC Programmer

Job Summary:

General Pattern is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Injection Molding Tool Maker and CNC Programmer to design, fabricate, assemble, and maintain high-quality injection mold tooling. This role combines precision engineering with hands-on toolmaking expertise to support the development and production of plastic components. The ideal candidate will have strong CAD skills, deep knowledge of mold design, and experience operating precision machining equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

Toolmaking & Fabrication

Operate and program CNC mills, lathes, EDM machines, grinders, and other shop tools to fabricate mold components.

Build and assemble molds to high precision tolerances.

Modify and repair existing molds and dies using CNCs and other machining-related equipment to improve performance or resolve issues.

Design & Development

Design aluminum tooling for injection molding using CAD software (SolidWorks and Mastercam preferred).

Collaborate with product designers and engineers to ensure part moldability and manufacturability to customer specifications.

Create detailed 2D drawings and 3D models for mold components and assemblies.

Select appropriate mold materials based on part requirements, production volume, and cost.

Testing & Validation

Conduct mold trials and troubleshoot any functional or cosmetic defects in molded parts.

Work with injection molding technicians to validate new molds and improve cycle times.

Implement design changes based on test feedback and production performance.

Maintenance & Documentation

Perform routine mold maintenance and refurbishing.

Maintain detailed records of mold designs, revisions, and maintenance activities.

Qualifications:

3+ years in mold design and/or toolmaking for injection molding.

Proficiency with CAD/CAM software and interpreting technical drawings.

Strong understanding of mold mechanics, parting lines, ejector systems, cooling, and gating.

Skills:

Experience:

Excellent mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity.

Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

Familiarity with injection molding processes and materials (e.g., thermoplastics, resins).

Highly organized with a strong attention to detail and a sense of urgency.

Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.

Work Environment:

Machine shop and manufacturing floor environment.

Regular use of machining tools and inspection equipment.

Occasional lifting of molds or components (50+ lbs) and prolonged standing.
