The Baraga County Road Commission has an immediate opening for an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join their team in L’Anse, Michigan. This position requires someone who has a strong background in diesel mechanics and heavy equipment used in construction and road maintenance.
WHAT WE OFFER.
$26.57 - $29.47 per hour starting pay based on your knowledge and experience.

Full-time 4-day work week during summer construction season (Monday-Thursday 10-hour days); 5-day work weeks during winter months.
WHAT YOU WILL DO.
Maintain and repair pickups, heavy duty trucks, heavy duty equipment and special equipment.
Utilize a well-rounded knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, electrical components, hydraulic systems, brakes, cooling, and air conditioning systems.
Examine vehicles to determine the nature, extent, and diagnosis of necessary repairs.
Raise vehicles using jacks or hoists to gain access to underside of vehicles.
Repair vehicles by installing new or rebuilt parts.
Perform general maintenance, safety checks and electrical repairs; make adjustments using hand tools or special tools.
Overhaul and repair engines, transmissions, differentials, and other components using mechanics tools and other equipment.
Practice safe work and lifting procedures at all times including wearing personal protective equipment.
Lift, push and pull heavy objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
At least 2 years’ experience as a truck and heavy equipment mechanic preferred.
Valid driver’s license required; Class B CDL (or ability to obtain) preferred, but not required to apply.
Experience in engine electronics on modern equipment preferred.
State Mechanic Certifications are a bonus.
Basic mechanic’s tool set required; company provides specialty tools/equipment.
Must be observant and safety minded in the course of completing your work.
Ability to collaborate with others as well as work independently while maintaining a positive attitude.
Ability to work in a shop environment as well as travel throughout Baraga County to worksites in a company provided vehicle.
Flexibility to work outside of normal scheduled hours and/or respond to emergencies if needed.
Ability to pass a physical and drug test (paid for by the Road Commission) required.
