Through experience and collaboration, we are reimagining a better, more equitable model of health and wellness.GENERAL SUMMARY:A Cytogenetic Technologist prepares and analyzes chromosomes so the results can be related to specific disorders or disease conditions. She/he processes tissues for microscopic analysis, analyzes the preparations, determines the karyotype and images the analyzed metaphase cells. She/he is responsible for conducting routine and/or specialized cytogenetic procedures, such as alternative banding techniques or molecular (FISH) studies, investigating problems with procedures and equipment, and maintaining QA/QC documentation. The responsibilities of each technologist are dependent on their job rotation.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Verifies and labels specimens and specimen related materials with two correct patient identifiers. Sets up and maintains cell and tissue cultures for chromosomal analysis, FISH, and/or cryopreservation. Prepares reagents, solutions, and maintains tissue culture logs and QC documentation.

Performs all tissue culture lab duties including culture maintenance, harvesting, and slide preparations according to established protocols. Ability to troubleshoot problems related to temperature, humidity, and other relating factors affecting chromosome morphology and quality.

Performs microscopic analysis, obtains and interprets high quality detailed digital images and karyograms. Summarizes and records microscopic results utilizing correct ISCN nomenclature and assumes responsibility for complete and accurate reports.

Investigates technical problems with procedures and monitors preventive maintenance of all work related equipment and supplies. Maintains specimen and QC logs and manages stock/inventory of laboratory supplies in their workstation.

Participates in the following:

· Teach and assist new cytogenetic technologists, lab assistants, fellows, residents, and other personnel as assigned.· Orientation and training of new laboratory staff, residents, fellows, and students.· Development of new technologies and procedures to ensure Beaumont Health stays in the forefront of the most current technological advances in genetics.· Patient and Family-Centered Care culture· Q.I./process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and/or CAP surveys as applicable to the assigned department.· Staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO)· Friend-at-Work program and assists in training new hires as applicable/assigned· Staff meetings and committee meetings as assigned

Cost effectiveness: Efficient use of time in completing tasks accurately and timely. Mindful of appropriate use of laboratory funds through purchase requests and the observance of wasteful use of supplies.

Work Experience:· While previous experience as a cytogenetic technologist with ASCP certification in Cytogenetics (if certification eligible, certification must be obtained within two years of date of hire) is desired, other candidates with clinical laboratory experience and a strong interest in medical genetics and genomics will be considered.C.
