The Surgical Dental Assistant provides essential chairside assistance to oral surgeons or dentists during surgical procedures, including implant placements, extractions, and bone grafting. This role requires specialized knowledge of dental surgeries and involves maintaining a sterile and organized environment, ensuring patient care before and after procedures, and promoting patient comfort and safety throughout their surgical experience.

Key responsibilities include preparing and sterilizing instruments, equipment, and rooms according to infection control protocols and assisting the oral surgeon or dentist by passing instruments and maintaining a clear surgical field through suction, retraction, and isolation techniques. The assistant also plays a critical role in preparing patients for surgery, reviewing medical histories and vital signs, and providing post-operative care instructions.

The Surgical Dental Assistant may be responsible for capturing intraoral and panoramic X-rays, maintaining radiographic records, and assisting with treatment planning. Strict adherence to OSHA and CDC guidelines for infection control and safety is essential, along with routine equipment maintenance and proper disposal of biohazard waste. Additionally, this role includes administrative duties such as scheduling surgeries, maintaining patient records, tracking surgical inventory, and coordinating with patients, vendors, and lab technicians regarding surgical appliances.

Candidates should possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with a certification from a dental assisting program preferred. A minimum of 1-2 years of dental assisting experience is required, with surgical experience being an asset. Certifications such as Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), CPR/BLS, and radiography certification are preferred or required, depending on state regulations.

Strong interpersonal skills and a focus on patient care are essential, as well as proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and scheduling software. Candidates should demonstrate a deep understanding of surgical instruments, the ability to work efficiently under pressure, and strict attention to detail regarding safety and hygiene protocols.

This role involves standing for extended periods, occasional heavy lifting, and exposure to bloodborne pathogens, requiring the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during procedures. Competitive compensation will be offered, with a benefits package that may include health insurance, paid time off, and opportunities for professional development.

The Surgical Dental Assistant position is ideal for individuals passionate about patient care and interested in working in a dynamic surgical dental environment.
