DescriptionReports To: Media Services Director, Deputy Director, and External Services ManagerThe Media Services Department of the City of Detroit is dedicated to delivering high-quality media content that keeps residents informed and engaged. Our team works closely with city departments to ensure that mayoral initiatives, city council updates, and public events are communicated clearly and consistently across various platforms.By producing accurate and engaging content, we help foster transparency, drive civic engagement, and ensure the city’s message reaches its community. In this fast-paced, collaborative environment, the Media Services Division is at the heart of Detroit’s communications efforts.Job Summary:The Managing Editor is responsible for overseeing the editorial operations within the Media Services department. This role includes managing the Communications Specialists, ensuring the quality and consistency of content, and coordinating with various departments to produce high-quality media for mayoral and city council events. The Managing Editor will also ensure all content aligns with the City’s communication strategy.Examples of DutiesKey Responsibilities
Comms Team Management
Supervise and lead the team of Communication Specialists.
Assign and manage video capture and editing tasks, ensuring timely completion of projects.
Provide guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering professional development.
Provide support for video capture and editing; may be required to assist with capturing video footage and performing video edits as needed.
Content Quality and Consistency
Review and edit all content for accuracy, clarity, and adherence to the City’s style guide and video production requests.
Ensure consistency in tone, style, and messaging across all media platforms.
Ensure Communication Specialists are creating, editing, and posting high-quality and engaging content on Media Services platforms.
Strategic Content Planning and Organizing
Review the content calendar, ensuring that Communication Specialists' assignments have been completed to meet social media posting timelines.
Audit Box folders to ensure that Communication Specialists are storing all captured and edited content in the appropriate folders.
Keep an accurate record of the assignment production Smartsheet.
Cross-Departmental Coordination
Work closely with the Media Services Director, Deputy Director, External Services Manager, and Social Media Manager to ensure all editing efforts are in alignment with the overall media strategy.
Coordinate with Communication Specialists to ensure seamless transition of visual content to the social media team.
Performance Metrics and Reporting
Provide regular updates and progress reports to the External Services Manager.
Evaluate the effectiveness of content strategies and make adjustments as needed.
Ensure Communication Specialists are following departmental directives, rules, and policies; report issues to the External Services Manager if corrective action is necessary.
Minimum QualificationsSkills and Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Communications, or a related field.
Minimum 5 years of experience in A/V management or a similar role.
Exceptional writing, editing, and prooing skills.
Strong leadership and team management abilities.
Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Proficiency in content management systems and editorial tools.
Knowledge of media production, including video and audio content.
Expertise in video production, including camera operation, lighting, and audio.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency in video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro).
Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
Supplemental InformationWorking Conditions
May require working evenings and weekends to accommodate project deadlines.
Occasional travel to various event locations within the city.
