Position Purpose: The Chief Engineer of the Hospital Central Utility Plant oversees the operation, maintenance, and strategic management of the hospital’s central utility plant, ensuring reliable, efficient, and safe delivery of critical utilities such as HVAC, electrical power, steam, water, and medical gas systems. This role is pivotal in maintaining a safe and comfortable environment for patients, staff, and visitors while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and optimizing operational efficiency.Primary Duties/Responsibilities: Plant Operations Management: Supervise the daily operations of the central utility plant, including boilers, chillers, generators, HVAC systems, water treatment systems, and medical gas systems, to ensure uninterrupted service.Maintenance and Repairs: Develop and implement preventive maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend equipment lifespan. Oversee troubleshooting and repair of complex utility systems.Team Leadership: Manage a team of engineers, technicians, and maintenance staff, providing training, performance evaluations, and fostering a culture of safety and accountability.Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including Joint Commission standards, OSHA, NFPA, and EPA guidelines. Maintain accurate records and documentation for audits and inspections.Energy Efficiency: Identify and implement energy-saving initiatives to reduce operational costs and support the hospital’s sustainability goals.Budget Management: Prepare and manage the central utility plant’s budget, including forecasting maintenance costs, capital expenditures, and resource allocation.Emergency Preparedness: Develop and maintain emergency response plans for utility failures, ensuring rapid recovery and minimal disruption to hospital operations.Vendor Coordination: Oversee contracts with external vendors for equipment maintenance, repairs, and upgrades. Negotiate service agreements to ensure cost effectiveness and quality.System Upgrades and Projects: Lead capital projects for the modernization or expansion of utility systems, collaborating with architects, contractors, and hospital leadership to meet long-term needs.
