General Summary: Under the supervision of the WIC Manager, the position is located at the Bay County Health Department providing education, counseling, and supporting families on lactation and breastfeeding, feeding and parenting methods. Prenatal and postpartum visits are conducted in the hospital and community settings as well. This position also addresses social determinants of health by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency, providing social support to the whole person and family. They help identify client strengths, needs, barriers, and risks and provide community resources for those needs and provide and model empathetic support and feedback when working with new moms, babies, and family members.Typical Duties:Conduct comprehensive assessment, including medical history, of mother and baby related to breastfeeding and human lactation. Assesses the needs of breastfeeding individuals and babies who are at risk of, or currently experiencing, lactation difficulties and provide follow up care.Develops goals specific to the needs identified through assessment and counseling and implements these to help mothers meet their personal breastfeeding goals. Refers to healthcare professionals when support requires clinical assessment, need for prescription or medical diagnosis.Advise on maintaining lactation when separated from their infant.Offer continual support for families during the weaning process and beyond as it pertains to breastfeeding.Educate, support, and offer referrals to mothers who choose to supplement or find that breastfeeding must be halted due to medical and/or personal reasons.Offer encouragement, companionship, an experienced point of view and foster confidence and a commitment to breastfeeding.Offer non-biased focused information, support, encouragement, guidance, referrals, and education within the community.Take medical history and/or notes of mother and baby and provide to clinical and healthcare workers as needed.Develops trust and rapport with clients and provides support using an empathic and client centered approach.Provide culturally sensitive health education and information.Conducts client assessments using standardized tools for maternal depression, parent-infant attachment, social support, developmental milestones, home safety as well as other non-standardized client assessments.Link individuals and families with appropriate resources such as
