We analyze payroll, offer payroll training, and provide guidance to ensure accurate payroll.The successful candidate will analyze payroll for over 200 Michigan Medicine employees including American Federation State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and non-bargained-for biweekly and monthly staff. This candidate must have the ability to work independently and demonstrate the ability to skillfully analyze complex information requests and reports regarding payroll practices. They will apply a broad knowledge of payroll principles, concepts, and methods ensuring strict compliance with payroll policies.What You'll Do

Review and verify employees' timesheets and schedules identifying appropriate timekeeping codes throughcoordination with supervisors, managers, payroll, human resource, and finance teams.

Ensure accurate and efficient payroll processing withstrict deadlinesin accordance with established rules, practices, guidelines, and the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement.

Effectively manage data from multiple sources to ensure all payroll transactions are processed accurately and in a timely manner.

Run and analyze payroll reports with information gathered from payroll data.

Investigate and resolve payroll discrepancies by collecting and analyzing information.

Maintain payroll integrity and confidentiality by following policies and procedures.

Address pay-related questions, concerns, and provide accurate payroll information with solutions.

Train and mentor new supervisors and managers.

Stay informed on updates and changes related to payroll processes and procedures, communicating updates to appropriate stakeholders.

Assist with tracking leave of absences, family medical leave act (FMLA) cases, workers compensation cases, and extended sick leave.

Ensure compliance with University of Michigan guidelines, federal and state regulations, and the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent plus 3 years performing payroll duties; or associate degree plus 1 year performing payroll duties; or bachelor's degree.

2+ years payroll experience for over 100 employees or 1-year payroll experience supporting bargained-for employees.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

Demonstrated expert attention to detail, accuracy, and efficiency.

Strong numeracy skills including the ability to perform moderately complex calculations.

Planning and organizational skills with emphasis on prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.

Problem solving skills including the ability to identify problems and determine solutions quickly and efficiently.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to provide information clearly, concisely, and consistently.

Ability to manage stress to meet deadlines while maintaining superior customer service.

Willingness to occasionally work unconventional hours to meet payroll deadlines. Some weekends and holidays may be required in accordance with the University's Payroll Schedule.

Proven record of reliable attendance.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people at all levels of the organization.

Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with a high degree of integrity.

Desired Qualifications

Knowledge of Michigan Medicines Policies and Procedures.

Knowledge of AFSCME CBA.

Experience with AFSCME Payroll.

Familiarity with punch-clock and self-service staff timekeeping.

Experience with M-Pathways.

Ability to run queries from M-Pathways.

Experience with Gross Pay Registers and reconciliation.

Familiarity with Tableau.

Understanding of internal controls.

Work ScheduleDay shift with willingness to occasionally work unconventional hours to meet payroll deadlines. Some weekends and holidays may be required in accordance with the University's Payroll Schedule.Work LocationsThis is a hybrid position with majority of the work occurring remotely. Employee's work performance will be periodically assessed, and the remote work agreement may be revised/revoked if necessary.Background ScreeningMichigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act.
