Examine, diagnose and treat patients. Perform physical examinations and order appropriate laboratory testing. Prescribe medication as needed and treat and follow a patient’s course of illness. Treat wounds, lacerations and minor trauma. Diagnose and treat medical problems. Engage in preventative medicine techniques such as vaccinations and annual examinations. Teach patients about the importance of healthy diets. Provide personal and family counseling including personal and social illness such as alcohol and drug abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV and AIDS. Educational RequirementsThe minimum education a Internal Medicine physician must posses is a Doctor of Medicine degree, and if trained abroad, an ECFMG certificate stating that the foreign physician has passed the examinations appropriate for medical licensure. These requirements are necessary for participation in accredited residency training programs and for licensure by the Board of Registration in Medicine in Massachusetts. In addition, the physician should have successfully completed an internship and residency program within the United States.
