Demonstrates core values in all interpersonal and interdepartmental interactions Provides direct assistance to the RN providing care in the preoperative and postoperative area. Obtains and documents vital signs, height & weight, blood glucose levels, measures output, and places new cardiac monitor on patient. Assists patient with ADLs; dressing, undressing, toileting, etc. Performs clinical functions such as EKGs, obtaining lab specimens, urine & serum, bladder scans, clipping and washing surgical site. (Specialized training needed) Applies splints, slings, immobilizers, and ice wraps/Polar Cubes, as needed. (specialized training) Utilizes sterile technique in assisting MD with special procedures such as bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, nerve blocks; including set up/clean up. Ensures necessary supplies are available/stocked. Provides training and fitting for orthopedic devices, including crutches and walkers. (specialized training) Provides weight bearing training as tolerated by patients. Provides training for walking and use of stairs; with/without a railing. Works with Same Day Discharge Total Joint patients to meet discharge requirements Perform jewelry removal with electric ring cutter (special training) Performs clerical duties including but not limited to order entry, requisitions, charges and statistics, chart preparation, cross-trained to Surgical Reception responsibilities including patient liaison; ensuring accuracy of all information. Communicates effectively with OR, preoperative and postoperative charge RN to anticipate departmental needs Transports patients to and from hospital departments and inpatient units. Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment Ensures patient confidentiality. Supports departmental activity at all times. Performs errands as requested. Possesses organizational and planning skills. Ability to concentrate and prioritize in fast paced distracting environment. Ability to work at a quick pace with minimal supervision. Ability to work in Perioperative environment. BLS certificationEducation Required Written and verbal English and Math skills at 12th grade level. Demonstrates computer skills. Knowledge of medical terminology and surgical procedures PACU experience preferredRegistration/Certification Certified Nursing Assistant or current enrollment in a nursing program with sufficient hours of clinical rotation.Physical/Environmental Requirements This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs. and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use.
