This individual will work in conjunction with anesthesia, nursing, and surgery, while providing necessary support in the Operating Room. This support includes, but is not limited to, room turnover and setup, patient transport, patient prep, stocking, anesthesia responsibilities and other general functions as assigned.Job Description:Principal Duties and Essential Functions:
Anesthesia Responsibilities
Responsible for restocking and cleaning equipment
Open and close scavenger system
Responsible for anesthesia machine drawer, including but not limited to:
Fill and turn off vaporizers when necessary;
Change soda lime when necessary;
Ensure proper connections;
Ensure that the O2 and N2O tanks are full
Check equipment cart for drugs and equipment and maintain its cleanliness
Responsible for the cleanliness of anesthesia monitors and cables
Setup electrodes, oxisensor and endotracheal equipment
Restock drawers, including changing out anesthesia drug trays, and monitoring equipment
Clean cart and machine in each room and setup machines at close of shift
Observe for changes in schedule
Restock I.V. solution cart, block cart and difficult intubation cart
Clean laryngoscope blades and temperature probes, package and deliver to Central Supply Room
Keep laryngoscopes bright
Report malfunctioning equipment immediately
Monitor anesthesia gases and nitrogen tanks in tank room and order anesthesia gases as needed
Changes OXYGEN E tanks as needed and keep backups on each stretcher
Keep stretchers stocked with variety of O2 masks for patient transport
Collaborate with Materials Coordinator to ensure adequate and appropriate anesthesia supplies are available at all times
Operating Room Responsibilities
Responsible for checking the OR bed or positioning devices for proper attachments Demonstrate a working knowledge of all tables and positioning devices and attachments
Clean all positioning equipment and bed attachments prior to putting away
Demonstrate initiative to put away extra equipment when not in use
Adhere to standard and resistant organism precautions
Wear personal protective attire appropriate for task being performed (i.e., gown, goggles, gloves)
Observe for and attend to blood or body fluid spills
Work effectively with other staff as a member of the surgical team
Respond to intercom calls in a timely manner
Assume responsibility for prompt room turnover times
Complies with on-call responsibilities
Responds within 30 minutes when on-call (unless another time frame is established by the Nursing Coordinator).
Assists staff in the PACU or other Surgical Services unit(s), as necessary
Patient Prep
Set-up suction, I.V., and endotracheal tube
Greet and identify patient
Attach monitor leads, oxisensor, and blood pressure cuff
Responsible for assisting any anesthesiologist or anesthetist, while:
Starting I.V.
Inducing endotracheal tube
Positioning patient
Protecting patient, e.g. eyes, limbs, etc.
Holding patient for spinal and epidurals
Ventilating patient under supervision of anesthesiologist
Assist during emergencies
Assists in positioning of patients for surgical procedures
Holds extremities for skin prep
Delivers PACU stretchers/patient beds to room upon request from primary/associate nurse
Assists in transferring the patients from the OR table to the PACU or patient's bed and assists in transferring patients to PACU when necessary
Room Turnover
Responsible for room turnovers between cases
Cleans monitoring devices and all anesthesia supplies, replaces O2 circuits, setup for next case and ensures stock is sufficient
Dispose of soiled linen and replace with clean laundry bag
Dispose of trash and re-line buckets with plastic liners
Mops floor with a clean mop and disinfectant solution after every case
Empties suction canisters in hopper near the decontamination room and discards them in a biohazard trash bag
Replaces clean suction canisters and tubing at each suction regulator in the OR
Cleans and re-makes OR bed and/or stretcher
Wipes all surfaces that have been contaminated by blood, body fluid or other contaminants
