About us:
Elmendorf Baking Supplies is a baking supply shop, cafe, and grain mill packed into a little corner of East Cambridge, MA. Our unique shop is a paradise for food lovers, stuffed with a wide array of baking supplies and hard-to-find ingredients for passionate bakers and cooks.
The shop is centered around our Vermont-built stone mill, where we mill grain sourced directly from small farms mostly in New England and the surrounding region. We sell our flour directly to customers, local chefs, and bake it into the pastries we serve at our cafe.
The cafe offers delicious homemade sandwiches, Barrington Coffee & espresso drinks, and awesome baked goods mostly made with flour milled at the shop. Our bakery recently received a Rising Star restaurant award!
The owners have years of FOH and BOH experience at some of Boston's best bakeries, restaurants, and specialty food stores.
About the position:
Our cafe features a variety of traditional and creative cafe fare including scones, muffins, cookies, seasonal pies and cakes. Most of what we bake here emphasizes seasonality and features the fresh milled flour that we mill here at the shop. The baker would work 2-3 days a week (6-8 hour shifts 16-24 hours total) to produce these items in conjunction with co-owner Alyssa (who baked at local institutions like Clear Flour and Formaggio Kitchen). There is an opportunity to add new items and specials to the menu as well.
In addition to baking this role includes learning to use our flour mill. Our house-milled flour is the soul of our baked goods and you’ll learn how to incorporate it into recipes and adjust those recipes based on seasonal grain. The position will include some milling for the shop as well.
Our ideal candidate will have previous professional baking experience, work hard, efficiently and independently. They will be open to learning new techniques/skills and our way of doing things but also bring their own creativity to the position. Reliability is key to this position! You must be able to work well with others. We're looking for somebody who is really passionate about baking, the kind of person who does it as a job but still wants to bake at home as well.
This position is being created as we expand our bakery and mill, which makes it a really cool time to join our team! The shop will be adding new equipment to expand what we do to include in-house lamination.
There is the potential for this position to become full-time.
Requirements:
At least 1 year of professional baking/pastry experience.
Able to stand on your feet for up to 8 hours and lift 50 pounds.

Preference given to candidates who expect to stick with us for a while.
Pay and Benefits:
Pay: Starting $20/Hour
Reasonable and somewhat flexible schedule
Two weeks paid vacation (after 6 months)
Optional retirement plan
Shift meals and paid breaks
Shoe stipend of $150
Monthly flour, grain, and bulk coffee stipend
30% employee discount

We also offer chances to meet local food producers, cookbook authors, and attend classes at our shop to deepen your food knowledge.
