The research focus is on reproductive health disparities, particularly those that impact lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) communities in terms of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, race/ethnicity, and other axes of social inequity.Fellows will be based in the Department of Population Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. They will work directly with Dr. Brittany Charlton and her team on NIH-funded research, including a new 5-year award that aims to elucidate obstetrical and perinatal health disparities impacting sexual minorities and their offspring. This research leverages data from the Harvard longitudinal cohort studies including the Nurses’ Health Study and Growing Up Today Study. Fellows will also have the opportunity to conduct research using the Department of Population Medicine’s unique data systems and linkages with health systems (e.g., administrative claims data, electronic health records).Fellows will be responsible for research activities such as developing analysis proposals, conducting data analysis, presenting at scientific meetings, and writing manuscripts. There will also be opportunities to develop new projects including through grant writing. Applicants should have the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. The length of the fellowship will last a minimum of one year and may be renewed thereafter.The Department, School, and University provide a vibrant, interdisciplinary research environment along with a wealth of resources to build a career. Fellows can take advantage of training, education, and mentorship opportunities at partner institutions including the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Mass General Hospital, Boston Children’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Fenway Health.Key Responsibilities/Duties – what you will be doing

Refines analytic plans for research papers. This involves creating detailed analysis plans, time-lines, and meeting with faculty and staff collaborators.

Works with study team and statistician to develop plans for and conduct data analyses.

Writes reports detailing research findings as needed for funders and for internal reporting such as to the IRB.

Prepares manuscripts detailing research findings and submits to peer-reviewed medical journal.

Gives presentations to departmental faculty and staff about research findings, and at external scientific conferences as appropriate.

Works closely with DPM faculty mentor to monitor progress and resolve questions or issues that arise during the course of the research.

Qualifications – what you need to perform the job

Doctoral degree, such as an MD, or PhD, or in research phase of doctoral program.

Intermediate knowledge of scientific research methods and biostatistics.

Familiar with statistical software including SAS.

Ability to learn techniques for analyzing complex data.

Sound knowledge of computer systems, including word processing and presentation software.

Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.

Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.

Ability to meet deadlines and work within budgets.

Knowledge of LGBTQ health disparities and reproductive health preferred.
