Job Summary:The scope of practice of Vascular Nursing occurs within the framework of the nursing process and encompasses those nursing functions which assist the member having diagnostic, therapeutic and interventional procedures. Nursing functions are directed toward providing continuity of care through pre-procedural assessment and preparation, intra-procedural intervention and post-procedural evaluation as well as patient education. The Vascular nurse assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures quality assurance and education.Essential Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the physician or PA, assists physicians with procedures requiring professional nursing skills and implements medical treatment plan.

Provides pre-procedural assessment and preparation, intra-procedural assessment and intervention and post-procedural assessment, intervention, and evaluation. Utilizes this assessment for identification of actual and potential needs. Responds to all medical emergencies, assuming role as team leader until attending physician or Emergency Medical system arrives. Administers all medications, P.O. or IV., including antithrombolytics, ordered by the attending physician: Oxygen, l.V. fluids, premedication, sedation, and narcotics, with appropriate V. S. and fluid monitoring. At appropriate intervals, administers l.V. contrast agents (ionic and nonionic). Performs or assists in l.V. angiocath or butterfly placement, access of AV grafts/fistulas or long-term vascular accesses, nasogastric tubes or urinary catheters as necessary in adults. Maintains crash carts and emergency supplies in the department daily, and monitors performance of defibrillator and suction. Checks supplies of Oxygen, l.V., Fluids, contrast, catheters, needles, and medications. Reviews discharge instructions with patients after procedures. Assists the physician in the triage of patients as urgent, ASAP, or routine for the purpose of scheduling.

Documents observations, interventions, and evaluations of the patient in the medical record in accordance with department policies and protocols.

Acts as interdepartmental liaison between other service departments, offices and providers.

Utilizes assessments to monitor and identify potential risks which impact on patient safety and takes appropriate action.

Provides professional nursing care to patients. Assists departmental staff by serving as a clinical resource.

Provides patient and family education.

Serves as a patient advocate.

Maintains all drugs, medications and medical supplies in the department.

Participates in Quality Improvement activities.

Monitors performance of medical equipment.

Attends continuing education programs and updates knowledge of regulations, standards and techniques related to assigned duties.

Assists the clinic coordinator with staff orientation in the Vascular Department.

Performs other related duties as directed.

Variable M, T, M, W, FBasic Qualifications:Experience

Two (2) years of recent critical care experience required.

Education

Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing required.

License, Certification, Registration

This job requires credentials from multiple states. Credentials from the primary work state are required before hire. Additional Credentials from the secondary work state(s) are required post hire.

Registered Nurse License (Maryland) within 6 months of hire AND Registered Nurse License (Virginia) within 6 months of hire

OR

Compact License: Registered Nurse within 6 months of hire

Registered Nurse License (District of Columbia) within 6 months of hire

Basic Life Support

Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Additional Requirements:

Proficiency in the use of applicable computer software required.

Full range of body motion to lift, walk and move patients, complete bimanual dexterity, eye-hand coordination and binocular vision corrected to 20/30, able to tolerate 1 5-20 lb. lead apron during procedures with monitored exposure to ionizing (X-ray) radiation.

Must be able to push/pull wheeled chair conveyances, stretch and other equipment weighing up to 200 pounds. Must be able to transfer, walk, and position patients weighing up to 200 lbs or over 200 lbs with assistance.

In order to work effectively with patients, must have effective interpersonal and communication skills and be able to stand, walk, bend, lift at least 50 pounds, hear, speak, and see.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to access AV fistulas/grafts preferred.
