DescriptionICF is seeking a librarian/cataloger to work on a contract with the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world's largest biomedical library. The librarian/cataloger will be responsible for creating and updating bibliographic records for monographs in the NLM database, using various standards and tools. The librarian/cataloger will also be expected to add Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and access points, verify authority records, and ensure accurate holdings and item records. The librarian/cataloger will work closely with the NLM staff and other ICF contractors to ensure the quality and consistency of the cataloging services. Successful candidates must be proficient in English and at least one other Western European language, such as, but not limited to French, German, Italian, or Spanish.This position will work onsite at the National Library of Medicine, 8600 Rockville Pike, Bethesda MD, 20894.Key Responsibilities

Create bibliographic records for monographs without preliminary records, either by importing available OCLC copy or by creating an original record directly in the NLM database using a template.

Update preliminary cataloging records to current full-level national standards, as modified per NLM's local policies.

Add a full complement of MeSH terms to each cataloging record.

Add access points to each cataloging record for each agent named in the statement of responsibility.

Confirm that all name headings used in the upgraded or created records have corresponding fully established authority records in the LCNAMES file in the Alma Community Zone.

Ensure that all bibliographic records have accurate holdings and item records, according to NLM's local policies.

Verify that bound-with titles have a separate Host Bibliographic record for the physical volume; creating one from template as needed.

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in library science, information science, or related field.

3+ years of prior experience using all the following standards:

MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data (MARC21).

Anglo American Cataloging Rules (2nd ed., 2002 rev, 2005 update) (AACR2).

Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRIs).

Resource, Description, and Access (RDA) original toolkit.

Library of Congress-Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements (LC-PCC PS).

BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) Metadata Application Profiles (MAPs).

Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance

Preferred qualifications

Prior experience in the following areas:

Cataloging materials in ExLibris' Alma software.

Cataloging historical or special collections monographs.

Assigning Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) to cataloging records.

Creating authority records per NACO standards.

Professional skills

Proficiency in English and at least one other Western European language, such as, but not limited to French, German, Italian, or Spanish.

Strong organizational and writing skills, time management skills, and superior attention to detail.

Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
