Position Objective: Provide services as a Bioinformatics Scientist in support of the overall functions of the Vaccine Research Center (VRC), PREMISE (Pandemic Response Repository through Microbial and Immune Surveillance and Epidemiology) program, within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and maintain bioinformatics pipelines for various genomics applications while providing scientific and operational guidance for PREMISE.
Develop web-based in-house databases and interface.
Implement and utilize workflows for next generation sequencing (i.e., QC and analysis).
Conduct protein structure computational analysis for antigen design and protein-protein interactions.
Collaborate with scientists from other organizations or institutions involved in similar or related research.
Provide guidance and scientific mentorship for students, post-doctoral fellows, non-doctoral research technicians and other contracts in the bioinformatics group in the discovery of bioinformatics pipelines for various genomic applications.
Provide guidance and scientific mentorship for students, post-doctoral fellows, non-doctoral research technicians and other contracts in the bioinformatics group in in innovation and development of analytical solutions.
Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams.
Basic Qualifications:
Ph.D. or MS in bioinformatics, computational biology/epidemiology or related discipline.
Minimum of two (2) years of experience analyzing bulk and single-cell RNA-Seq, serum proteome, microbiome profiling or similar datasets.
Practical knowledge of, and skill in, computerized data analysis, database management, and computer programming sufficient for the analysis of genomics datasets, including experience with the operation and maintenance of computers with Linux, Mac OS, or Microsoft operating systems.
Programming experience in environments such as Linux, Bioconductor R, Perl and/or Python.
Computer programming skills with proficiency in R and at least one scripting language (Perl/Python/Ruby).
Minimum Qualifications:
Proficiency in C/C and/or Java as well as experience with multiple OS platforms, and experience with database design and construction, and dynamical system theory and modeling are pluses.
Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff.
Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects.
