Job Description
As a pilot escort vehicle operator, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient transport of oversized loads on highways and major roads. A pilot car driver works in conjunction with the truck driver of an oversized load to make sure the truck reaches its destination safely. The pilot driver travels in front of, or behind the load in a separate vehicle, warning the public of any potential hazards, traffic changes, or obstacles due to the oversized load. Your primary duty is to protect the load, the driving public, and property from potential hazards associated with moving large, heavy, or wide loads. This position requires excellent driving skills, attention to detail, professionalism, and strict adherence to safety regulations.
Required Availability
Monday-Friday: Must be readily available on Saturdays and Sundays upon load readiness. Differential pay provided for all Sunday work performed.

Key Responsibilities
Traffic management: Lead or follow oversized loads to ensure they are safely transported, providing clear communication and directions to the truck driver and other road users
Route Assessment: Evaluate routes for potential hazards, including low bridges, sharp turns, shoulder obstruction, and road construction. Utilize google maps to plot routes per provided permits.
Communication: Maintain constant communication with the truck driver, other escort drivers, and law enforcement via radio to ensure coordination and safety.
Safety Compliance: Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations regarding the transport of oversized loads, including the proper use of warning lights, signs, and flags.
Documentation: Complete and maintain all required paperwork, such as trip logs, mileage, gas, incident reports, and permits to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Emergency Response: Be prepared to act quickly and appropriately in the event of an emergency or unforeseen situation on the road.
Public Interaction: Interact with the public professionally, providing information and assistance when necessary to ensure the safe passage of the load.
Important Details
Accommodations: While traveling on out of state/overnight runs, you will be provided a hotel stay. There are instances when adequate hotels are unavailable; potential candidates must be comfortable with resting in the pilot car if required.
Long Distance Travel: Pilot escort candidates may be required to travel with loads over several states (Wisconsin, Iowa, etc), having to stay on the road for days or weeks at a time. Drivers are obligated to stay with the load until delivery is complete. MOST LOADS WILL BE LONG DISTANCE, candidates must be completely comfortable with potentially being on the road for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience: Previous experience in a similar role or commercial driving experience is ideal
Licenses/Certifications: A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. Additional certifications (pilot car certification) may be required based on the location and type of load being escorted.
