This position is open to anyone who meets the minimum and selective qualifications listed below by the closing date. This is a position specific recruitment. Nature of Work: This is an engineering position in the field of materials evaluation for highway design and construction. This position reports directly to the Assistant Division Chief (ADC)- Field Section in the Soils and Aggregate Technology Division (SATD) of the Office of Materials Technology and will be responsible for specific tasks and projects to assist in the operations of the section. These tasks include, but are not limited to, technical and management assistance, field and laboratory operations assistance, Assistant Radiation Officer duties, soils and aggregate class instructor, and the lead role in SATD special projects. In the absence of the ADC, the Field Engineer will be receiving directions from the Field Team Leader. The Field Engineer will apply engineering theories and applicable policies and standards to a variety of efforts as they relate to materials designated for highway construction and to operational improvement. "The State Highway Administration (SHA) has been named Training Magazine’s Training APEX Awards for the fifth consecutive year."QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university.Experience: One (1) year of experience in professional engineering.Selective Qualification: One year (1) of experience in testing, inspection and/or quality control/quality assurance in the fields of construction or soils and aggregate materials.This statement contains a selective qualification, which is more focused in scope than the minimum qualifications for this classification. Selective qualifications are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (i.e., knowledge, skill, or abilities).PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will possess the following: Experience in quality assurance and evaluation of the geotechnical materials used for pavement, embankments, and highway construction Knowledge of troubleshooting material production and application problems related to performance problems in the field Excellent oral and written communication skills Time and resource management skills Notes:
Additional work experience in professional engineering, or in technical engineering at the journey level or above, may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.
Possession of a master’s degree in engineering may be substituted for the required experience.
Persons currently registered as Professional Engineers in the state of Maryland, or in a state with comparable requirements, are considered to have met the education requirements.
