Maine Department of Corrections is seeking a Principal for the A.R. Gould School located within the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine. This role oversees, directs and coordinated the academic instruction, vocational instruction, and library programs at Maine’s only secure juvenile facility serving both detained and committed youth. Responsibilities include developing and implementing education program goals and objectives in order to provide educational benefits to residents. Supervision is exercised over a large professional staff. Work is performed under administrative direction. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE: Assigning work and providing guidance to teachers about educational objectives, curriculum, expectations, and performance standards in order to help them design individualized educational program. Reviewing and evaluating program performance and effectiveness and resident outcomes in order to ensure educational standards, policies, and guidelines are met. Hiring and supervising a large staff of educators to ensure compliance with educationsal standards. Implementing and complying with human resource laws, policies, procedures and practices such as: AA/EEO, recruitment, employment, position classification, performance appraisals, training, discipline, contract administration, human resource components of security protocols of agency information security and confidentiality policies, and employee safety. Must have previous IEP writing and implementing experience. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLs, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Knowledge of applicable Maine and federal laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Knowledge of educational administration. Knowledge of teaching methods and practices. Ability to supervise subordinate personnel. Ability to supervise a large professional staff. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to write clearly and effectively. Ability to develop program goals and objectives. Ability to evaluate programs. Ability to use applicable computer programs. Ability to write and submit grants to fund educational programs and manage contracts for supplemental education services. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Current valid Principal’s Certificate as issued by the Maine Department of Education.
