Lecturer in Exercise Health and Sport Sciences (Renewable) - Fall 2025

The University of Southern Maine’s College of Science, Technology and Health seeks candidates for a renewable Lecturer in Exercise, Health, and Sport Sciences within the Department of Exercise, Health, and Sport Sciences (EHSS) beginning Fall 2025. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses within the Department’s Exercise Science and Health Sciences degree programs. Lecturer rank faculty typically teach 12 credit hours per academic semester (24+ academic year)and advises 40 -50 students during an academic year. The selected candidate will also provide service to the department, college, university, community, and profession. Specific courses may include: Introduction to Exercise, Health, and Sport Sciences (SPM 100) - This course introduces students to a variety of career options and opportunities in the health sciences and surveys topics important to all health-related disciplines. Topics include: reading and interpreting the literature in health science, exercise physiology, epidemiology, athletic training, exercise and sport nutrition, biomechanics, motor control and learning, and sport and exercise psychology.Introduction to Personal Training (SPM 260): An overview of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed by fitness instructors to plan, implement, and evaluate safe and effective exercise programs. Emphasis is on exercise programs for individuals and groups. A 45-hour field experience is incorporated into the course to provide students with practical application related to course work.Kinesiology and Lab (SPM 381/382) - Structural and functional anatomical analysis of human movement. The course will also incorporate principles of mechanics as they apply to the analysis of human movement.Biomechanics and Lab (SPM 390/391) - Evaluation, analysis, and application of anatomical and mechanical factors that influence human movement.Exercise Testing, Assessment, and Prescription (SPM 430) - This course focuses on knowledge and skills necessary for assessing health-related components of physical fitness. The course will also focus on prescription and design of programs to develop health-related fitness that will be applied in the laboratory setting.Exercise for Special Populations (SPM 450) - The focus of this course is on exercise programming guidelines and recommendations for a variety of special populations that includes but is not limited to heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, the elderly and pediatric conditions.Clinical Internship/Co-op (SPM 495) - This culminating experience for athletic training and exercise science majors provides the opportunity for students to apply knowledge and skills gained through didactic, practicum, clinical, and laboratory experiences in a work setting.The Department of Exercise, Health and Sport Sciences (EHSS) (https://usm.maine.edu/department-exercise-health-sport-sciences/) offers degrees in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, and Health Sciences. These innovative programs offer students the opportunity to gain clinical experience while using the most advanced athletic training and exercise science equipment available. EHSS offers accredited, professional programs that provide a quality learning environment through content-rich curricula, student-faculty interactions, and active learning experiences to emphasize the application of knowledge.This position will be located on our Portland Campus and will pay annual salary of $49,725. This is an on campus, in-person teaching position. Candidates must reside within commutable distances from the USM campuses. A completed Master’s Degree in Exercise Science or related field.

Two+ years fulltime teaching experience in higher education.

Certifications from NSCA or ACSM

Must have experience advising students.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working with movement analysis software such as Kinotek and/or Dartfish.

Must have experience working with community partnerships and students in practicums and internships sites.
