Summary These positions are located in Acadia National Park, in the Resource Management Division. The typical seasonal period for this position is late-April thru mid-October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Responsibilities The purpose of the positions is to perform uncomplicated technical biological science tasks common to natural resource management. The primary duties will consist of monitoring, testing, inventory, capture, sampling, and radio telemetry of bats. Other inventory and monitoring and survey duties include peregrine falcons, alewife, habitat restoration, and maintaining deployments of passive acoustic recorders and other equipment. Data management analysis and reporting for all projects as well as others as assigned duties, such as equipment maintenance, public and staff training and outreach will be expected. Area Information: Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine, serves as the duty station. Acadia National Park is located 50 miles southeast of Bangor, Maine, and 240 miles northeast of Boston, Massachusetts. Acadia National Park protects a landscape of rare scenic beauty. Acadia's mountains are the highest rocky headlands on the Atlantic shore of the United States, and the vistas from these mountaintops encompass forested woodlands, shimmering lakes, quiet marshes, bold rocky shores, and coastal islands. Surrounding the park on all sides, the ocean strongly influences the park's character. Visitation exceeds three million visitors annually, with the highest visitation occurring in July and August. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/10/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. To qualify for these positions, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE (GS-05): At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, assisting with the performance of wildlife inventories, monitoring and protection activities for a variety of wildlife species; conduct field surveys in remote locations to document and assess animal presence, abundance, reproduction, management issues, and population dynamics using established protocols and standard scientific equipment. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, mathematics. At least 6 semester hours of courses must have been directly related to the position being filled. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Note: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of course of study leading to a bachelors degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, experience performing of wildlife inventories, monitoring wildlife species and protection activities; conduct field surveys in remote locations to document and assess animal presence utilizing established protocols and standard scientific equipment; establish biological techniques and methods for the research and conservation of wildlife and habitats; develop field reports and present information on wildlife management. You must include hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Field work includes exposure to extreme weather and terrain conditions, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, snakes, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
