Position Title: Criminal Defense Attorney

Department: Criminal

Employment Status: Full Time Employee

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports to: President and/or Senior Partners

Position Summary

The Criminal Defense Attorney serves as the lead attorney for clients throughout the entire criminal process. This includes conducting initial meetings with clients, reviewing their discovery (body-worn cams, police reports, etc.), discussing the discovery with the client, negotiating with prosecutors, preparing motions, arguing motions, and trying cases. Firm attorneys are laser-focused on providing excellent customer service and solving client challenges.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

· Advise client on their legal rights in matters and draw up legal documents about their case

· Handle cases independently from intake to trial

· Attend pretrial hearings on behalf of clients and advise clients following each hearing about best strategies

· Manage court appearance, trial, drafting motions, interviewing witnesses, and performing legal research

· Analyze probable outcomes of cases using knowledge of legal precedents

· Manage workload of cases

· Provide legal analysis for clients to determine any possible case benefits

· Accrue additional evidence to support clients’ cases or for arguments against the Prosecution’s charges

· Prepare clients for testimony; determine essential goals of case strategy and gather information from witnesses and important experts that support client's positions

What It Takes to Win

To excel in this role, you will display a passion for criminal law, a strong understanding of litigation strategies, and exceptional public-speaking skills. You should also show compassion toward your clients and conduct yourself in a professional manner, irrespective of the crime they have been accused of. Previous experience as a criminal lawyer is advantageous.

Must be a team player as well as be able to work independently

Ability to remain calm, cheerful, dependable, and respectful with all clients

High level of discretion and ability to maintain strict confidentiality

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities)

Criminal defense experience (newly barred attorneys are encouraged to apply)

Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies, preferred

Must be an active member and in good standing with the Louisiana Bar.

Able to work independently and communicate effectively with clients and the team.

Possess a demonstrated history of excellence in their career, as well as a passion for serving clients.

Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required

Basic computer hardware and software, such as Microsoft Office: Excel / Outlook / Word, knowledge, preferably

Advanced knowledge in client confidentiality, client contact, legal administration, legal compliance, litigation, administrative writing, documentation, word processing, verbal communication, and client relations

Ability to understand complex legal documents / forms

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position is largely stationary, except when moving about the office to make copies and scans. The person in this position frequently communicates with clients and staff regarding case updates. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.

Job Types: Full-time, +Commission

Pay: $60,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
