Animal Husbandry & Livestock Production Manager

Schedule: 32 hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling as needed. Position may require additional days/hours as required due to but not limited to: staffing shortages from illness and/or injury.

Compensation: $18 per hour, non-exempt employee.

Medical Stipend: Up too $200 per month as based on the cost of the individual’s health insurance policy. Medical stipend is paid over each pay period for the calendar year. Employee is responsible for submitting invoices monthly to accounts payable for verification.

Time off from work: This position has up to one (1) month, four weeks, unpaid vacation time.

Position Summary:

This part-time position’s responsibilities include but are not limited to maintaining records and scheduling of care for all of SRF’s animals on-site. Responsible for maintaining relationships with all providers of listed stock, their corresponding veterinarians, and feed providers. Maintains an ongoing list of needs for infrastructure repairs to animals pens and works with Executive Director on sourcing handyperson(s) for necessary repairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Animal Husbandry – Primary Responsibility

Throughout the year, plans and schedules care for all SRF’s farm animals.

Regularly updates preventative care medicines, emergency care needs, and programs on Google Drive while communicating those needs to all farm family members on a need-to-know basis

Maintains the on-site inventory of stock needed for all vetting and animal care requirements: hay, feed, grooming, worming, salt licks, ointments, equipment, other preventative medications, etc. Sources and orders the above items as needed while notifying the team of the delivery and shipping schedule for items.

Creates and maintains a list of running infrastructure repairs such as but is not limited to fencing/pen repairs, plumbing leaks at their specific location on the farm, maintenance, and or replacement of structures needed. Researches costs of materials and works with Executive Director on identifying and scheduling a handy person to make necessary repairs.

Takes a lead to prepare the animals for interactions with guests at SRF.

On Farm Educator

Works with Executive Director, Education & Outreach Coordinator, and the Garden and programs manager for including animal science and husbandry methods in the programming for K-12 and Adult Education

Aids the Education and Outreach Coordinator and Garden Production and programs Manager by leading field trips, guided tours, and farmer for the day whenever necessary.

Shared Farm Responsibilities

Each member of the Sugar Roots Farm Family assists in daily operational farm management chores and, whenever applicable, demonstrates to volunteers and interns how to perform the required tasks.

Natural Disasters: Aids in prepping for and cleaning up after a natural disaster, including hurricanes, heavy rain events, and freezes for all farm areas: garden, husbandry, and buildings.

Cleaning: Lends a helping hand in maintaining ground, barn, kitchen, farmstead, tack room, tool shed, greenhouse, and compost toilet as assigned by daily tasks schedule.

Compost: Assists in collecting new materials from Compost Now and the on-farm drop-off site, helps in dumping collected materials, maintains compost temperature log, as well as turning and spreading of both vegetable and manure piles once the process is complete.

Events: Supports in planning and execution of fundraising events on the farm. Assists the Executive Director and staff in event planning and managing on and off site rental space when events are taking place.

Garden: Aids in prepping and building garden beds, seeding, and assists in pest management and fertilization throughout each season.

Husbandry: Assists in feeding, cleaning animal pens, filling waters, and primary animals care. Veterinary emergencies: to provide support by driving to and from emergency vet hospitals, providing care for sick animals, and administrating medications as needed.
