Definition & DutiesUnder the direction of the Jail Administrator, transports prisoners, juveniles, and committed respondents. Ensures the safe and secure escort of inmates to and from the Jail for court appearances. Transports committed respondents to and from various mental health institutions. Transports inmates to various institutions throughout the State of Iowa. Maintains safety and security of prisoners, County employees and the public.Knowledge of & Ability to

Traffic laws and regulations in the State of Iowa

Map reading and route planning

English language to include basic grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary

Interact effectively with individuals being transported

Have sufficient manual dexterity to make handwritten notations and which permits moderate use of a keyboard and mouse

Stand, sit, bend, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch, reach and crawl

Lift, move, carry, push and/or pull up to approximately 50 pounds

Have sufficient personal mobility to complete field work

Work beyond scheduled shift when necessary

Minimum Education, Training & Experience & Special RequirementsHigh school graduate or equivalent. Previous experience in law enforcement or security preferred, but not required.Special requirements: Must pass a background investigation. Valid Class C CDL with passenger endorsement or ability to attain within 60 days of hire. Safe driving record and insurable under County liability coverage. Specific Dutiesto be performed satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodationThe following duties are normal for this position. These are not construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Operates a motor vehicle to ensure safe and secure transport of inmates, committed respondents, and juvenile detainees.

Assists deputy sheriffs in picking up and transporting respondents for involuntary commitments to mental health institutions.

Maintains daily log of trip times, locations, and expenses. Compiles reports for supervisory review as required.

Files records and assists in Record’s office.

Attends work-related meetings, training, conferences, and seminars.

Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, collective bargaining agreement, and safety practices.

Attends work regularly at the designated place and time.
