Position SummaryPosition responsible for training lifeguards for the City of Indianapolis/Marion County aquatic facilities and certifying them in accordance to the standards of Starfish Aquatic Institute (SAI), Starguard Training Program. The Instructor-Auditor is also responsible for conducting periodic audits and inspections of all aquatic facilities to ensure that the staff are performing their duties and responsibilities in accordance to SAI and Department policy and procedures. Auditor will then complete a written report of the findings. Position will also be asked to help with staff trainings on a variety of topics including aquatic risk management, pool chemicals and operations, concessions, and facility cleanliness.Position ResponsibilitiesConducts 24-hour lifeguard training courses in accordance with the standards of Starfish Aquatic Institute (SAI), Starguard Training ProgramConducts 10-hour lifeguard re-training courses in accordance with the standards of Starfish Aquatic Institute (SAI), Starguard TrainingEllis Conducts video audits of all aquatic facilities and staff that simulate the audits conducted by Starfish Aquatic Institute. Audits will consist of three segments: A secret audit of one to three lifeguards performing their water-scanning responsibilities followed by an unannounced vigilance awareness check of a lifeguard's capability to detect an underwater manikin. A check of the facility lifeguard staff's ability to handle an aquatic emergency scenario. A review of the administrative responsibilities and written documentation.Reviews the audit results on-site with the supervisors on-duty; notify the Park Manager, Aquatic Manager and Assistant Aquatic Manager immediately of any audit failures.Prepares written reports of the audit results using a designated form and submits them to the Senior Manager of Aquatics or designee within 72 hours of completion.This list of duties and responsibilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties or responsibilities that management may deem necessary from time to time.QualificationsHigh School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience as a Starguard Instructor is preferred. Six (6) months experience as an aquatic manager with a knowledge of pool chemicals and mechanical operations is preferred. Two (2) years of experience within Indy Parks & Recreation aquatics is preferred. A valid Starguard certification issued by Starfish Aquatic Institute is required. A working knowledge of a video camera is required. Must be able to communicate effectively both in oral and written formats. A valid driver's license is required.Independent JudgmentPosition requires a working knowledge of the Indy Parks & Recreation standard operating procedures and risk management policies and guidelines. Based on the knowledge above, this position requires a great degree of independent judgment in determining the degree to which lifeguards and aquatic staff exceed/meet/fail the standards of lifeguard training and independent audit results. The magnitude of these decisions is at the life & death level of responsibility.
