Your Specific Responsibilities: The incumbent is to provide sexually transmitted disease, epidemiological and consultative services. The incumbent in this position (Disease Intervention Specialist, DIS) acts as the front-line of defense for intervening in the spread of STDs and communicates with physicians, hospitals, clinics, and laboratory personnel, both public and private, to confirm treatment and diagnosis of all reportable STDs. They also have the responsibility for the operation and/or surveillance of all activities involved in the control of Sexually Transmitted Diseases; especially Syphilis, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. The incumbent interviews, re-interviews and cluster interviews persons infected or suspected of being infected with these diseases for identification of names of additional persons at risk of infection. He/she subsequently performs appropriate field investigations to locate and successfully arrange for examination and treatment to those persons at risk, due to possible exposure, and/ or those with a positive or a reactive test when identified through the interviewing process. Blood testing of syphilis contacts, suspects and associates is completed as indicated. The employee assists in the coordination of screening for all STDs in the community. The employee receives laboratory reports indicative of the infected and subsequently performs appropriate investigations and referrals to ensure those individuals are provided treatment for the disease. He/she additionally maintains a mechanism by which those individuals are provided a test to cure (TOC) and a subsequent re-screen. The employee visits provider’s site periodically to ensure quality control and maintains the highest level and most modern techniques of STD screening within those sites. Provide HIV/AIDS/STI/PrEP prevention and education counseling, treatment for chlamydia, and referrals to inmates housed at the Gadsden County Jail. Also, provides community screenings, which includes but not limited to rapid HIV and STI screenings (note: screenings may take place in a non-clinical setting). The incumbent provides pre/post counsel to HIV tested candidates. Provides medications and directly observes therapy to clients per policy and procedure. Refers clients as appropriate. Interacts and communicates effectively with supervisor, other departmental personnel, and clients. Accurately documents services electronically in HMS and STARS systems. The incumbent has the ability to develop and deliver education and prevention training programs, for individuals, groups, and all clients, as assigned or as needed, on all STDs, which define ways to reduce the risk of transmitting the disease that they have or define techniques to risk reduction so they will not become infected. Provides community outreach education/activities when indicated. Participates in surveys, interviews and other information-gathering activities as requested by SHO staff.
