Role Definition:Caterpillar Pontiac, IL is seeking an experienced Metallurgical Engineer to lead a team of technicians in the Metallurgical and Chemical Labs and supporting onsite Heat-Treating operations. This role is instrumental in providing technical guidance, managing laboratory operations, and driving process improvements to support our Fuel System facility in Pontiac.What You Will Do:
Lead and mentor a team of technicians and engineers in the Metallurgical and Chemical Labs to achieve performance and quality KPI metrics.
Provide technical guidance on laboratory and heat treatment needs for continuous improvement.
Evaluate and implement new processes and systems to optimize laboratory operations and enhance efficiency.
Communicate testing results and findings effectively to customers, suppliers, team members, and other business units.
Govern performance metrics and manage staffing levels to meet changing production demands.
Initiate and manage projects in the Metallurgical and Chemical Labs to address operational challenges, including quality concerns, efficiency improvements, and safety risks.
Support metallurgical and chemical testing process control and ensure compliance with relevant certifications and audits.
Drive a culture of safety within the lab and heat treat areas, ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols and identifying potential risks (SFMEA).
Develop training and competency plans for lab personnel to promote professional growth and skill enhancement.
Oversee critical quality control and improvement testing, ensuring high standards are maintained.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide metallurgical expertise for various fuel system projects and initiatives.
Lead efforts to achieve laboratory certification, such as ISO 17025, by developing and implementing a comprehensive certification plan.
Troubleshoot issues during the heat treatment process and implement effective solutions to improve operational efficiency.
What You Will Have:
Bachelor’s degree in Materials or Metallurgical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
Experience in manufacturing support with a focus on metallurgical processes.
Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Working level knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.
Judgment and Decision Making: Extensive experience with and knowledge of the decision-making process; ability to carefully evaluate the impact of emerging business situations and choose the best path forward communicating actions and activities that maximize organizational performance.
Capacity Planning & Management - MFG: Working level knowledge of tools, approaches and practices for determining production demand and ability to manage resources needed to provide satisfactory levels of service.
Lean Manufacturing: Extensive experience with and knowledge of the philosophy, principles and implementation approaches of lean manufacturing; ability to integrate and implement lean manufacturing philosophy into existing production and management processes.
Manufacturing Equipment: Extensive experience with and knowledge of the electrical, mechanical and logistics equipment used in manufacturing; ability to safely operate, maintain, update and store them.
Manufacturing Processes: Expert level knowledge of existing product manufacturing methods, technologies and processes; ability to execute, plan, manage and monitor the entire manufacturing process.
Manufacturing Safety: Extensive experience with and knowledge of manufacturing safety; ability to identify work-related hazards and perform necessary activities to meet regulatory requirements for the safety and protection of workers, environment and site.
Manufacturing Standards, Procedures and Policies: Extensive experience with and knowledge of organizational standards, procedures and policies in manufacturing activities; ability to plan, guide, and monitor manufacturing processes for compliance.
Top Candidates May Also Have:
Previous experience in Heat Treat Engineering.
Strong understanding of manufacturing engineering concepts including SFMEA, APQP, CI, SW, CPS, and BIQ.
Demonstrated experience with lean manufacturing principles.
Experience leading a team or managing projects.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
