This role facilitates the direct clinical activities for nursing and support personnel necessary to ensure the highest level of professional and technical operating room care practices. The Service Line Coordinator serves as the primary resource or “go to” person for the service line addressing quality, safety, education, technology, and orientation/competency for the nurses and surgeons under their purview. The Service Line Coordinator exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.Other information:Required Job Qualifications:Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure requiredPreferred Job Qualifications:Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred Three years of OR experience preferred with demonstrated high level clinical skill in area of specialtyPhysical Demands: Work requires the ability to walk throughout the Medical Center and to be standing or walking most of the designated shift. Work requires lifting or carrying objects 35-40lbs. and lifting and positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs. The ability to check documents for errors, use a keyboard to enter or retrieve data, and closely examine specimen, images or reports is required. Work conditions include performing procedures where carelessness could result in injury or illness and contact with potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agentsResponsibilities:

Serves as primary clinical nursing expert in area(s) of specialization.

Oversees nursing interventions across the total range of complexity and evaluates the patient’s response to treatment.

Constantly seeks process improvement opportunities regarding supple utilization and charge captures.

Acts as the primary liaison between the patient, surgeon, nursing and technical staff.

Provides education and support to the patients, and co-workers in the service line. Serves as a patient advocate at all times.

Treats patients, family member, surgeons, and all members of the health care team with courtesy and respect.

Collaborates with the interdisciplinary surgical team to identify patients with special needs; facilitate the flow of operative cases as to minimize delays in the operating room, and ensure availability of necessary equipment, instruments, and specialty products.

Anticipates needs and pursues opportunities to be of service to patients, families and all members of the health care team.

Works with the Education/Quality Coordinator to assure onboarding/orientation of new hires, s, training, annual competency validation, and learning opportunities are available in the area of specialty.

Elevates surgeon and anesthesia concerns to the AUD/UD team. Also brings topics for potential investigation to the Nursing Quality/UAC group. Coordinates peer review of nursing quality and safety issues for the service line.

Analyzes multi-system effects of disease processes on patients’ health status and communicates all relevant factors to medical/nursing staff.

Partners with others to identify and remove barriers that affect patient outcomes and facilitate solutions at a patient, unit, or system level

Assures judicious utilization of supplies and equipment during the peri-operative period. Monitors utilization statistics and adjust preference cards as needed.

Assures accuracy and implementation of computerized OR record, physician preference and case cart forms.

Implements surgical instrument/equipment preparation, processing and management protocols. In coordination with attending surgeons, provides area specific expertise regarding equipment, instrumentation, and specialty product needs.

Facilitates evaluation of state-of-the-art equipment and instrumentation consistent with the preferences/requests of the attending surgeons and Operating Room initiatives.

Works in concert with Supply Chain to ensure adequate quantities of needed supplies and equipment for OR rooms servicing their specialty surgeons.

Functions as a role model of nursing excellence in both the circulating and scrub functions of operating room nursing.

Provides guidance in helping nursing team members establish clinical priorities to meet each patient’s unique needs.

Assures that all aspects of nursing care are age specific and appropriate

Accepts responsibility to participate in cases outside of his/her areas(s) of specialty as delegated

Role models flexibility for all nursing staff by accepting requests to participate in cases outside of his/her areas(s) of specialty as delegated

Offers suggestions and rationale to the UD, AUD or Schedule Board Coordinators regarding specific staff assignments.

Directs nursing actions during clinical emergencies

Acts as a role model to foster a culture promotes interdisciplinary teamwork and cooperation.

Employs constructive conflict resolutions strategies.

Provides leadership in developing and interpreting nursing policies and procedures to other members of the healthcare team.

Assumes select administrative functions as delegated by the Unit Director/designate in the absence of the area AUD.

Serves as a mentor and expert preceptor in the area(s) of specialty.

Carries out the components of performance necessary for successful Rush employees

Attends training and educational programs identified by Rush as necessary for this position.
