This is not a live aboard position. (Not allowed in Kaneohe Bay)
Position Summary
Marimed Foundation is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Second Mate to support the operation, maintenance, and instructional efforts aboard our 96’ sailing school vessel, SSV Makani Olu, and associated small craft. This position plays a vital role in maintaining vessel safety and functionality, mentoring trainees, and contributing to the broader mission of our maritime programs. The Second Mate will serve as one of the ship’s Safety Officers, oversee rigging systems, and periodically perform Watch Officer duties.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Participate in the operation, safety, and maintenance of the SSV Makani Olu.
Operate, instruct, and maintain small sail and power vessels, recreational water equipment, and related tools.
Possess thorough knowledge of maintenance procedures for rig, hull, deck, and engineering systems, including sails, engine, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Assist in training ship’s crew and teaching sail trainees, both aboard and in classroom settings.
Serve as Watch Officer and Lead Deckhand, ensuring safe working conditions and compliance with safety protocols.
Participate in shipboard cleanliness, crew quarters maintenance, and assist with provisioning and laundry duties around voyage periods.
Facilitate instructional classes and help with curriculum development for maritime training.
Maintain accurate student curriculum records and support logistical planning and transportation of students.
Support overall maritime program goals and contribute to daily ship operations as needed.
Follow all Marimed policies, standard operating procedures, and U.S. Coast Guard regulations.
Carry out additional duties as assigned by the Captain or President & CEO.
Relationships and Supervision
Reports directly to the Captain.
In the Captain’s absence, reports to the President & CEO or designated supervisor.
Collaborates with Marimed Foundation staff and other contracted crew.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
High school diploma or GED required.
Experience:
Must have prior sailing experience
Prefer at least two years on sailing vessels in a watch-standing role.
Prior experience teaching sailing whether on small or large vessels
Proficient in traditional vessel maintenance, including marlinspike seamanship, sail repair, electronics, plumbing, and protective coatings.
Skills and Attributes:
Sensitivity to and awareness of local cultures is beneficial.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Demonstrated ability to teach maritime skills is a strong plus.

Required:
o CPR and First Aid
Optional:
o USCG Merchant Marine Officer License (Master, Near Coastal or All Oceans) with Auxiliary Sail Endorsement for vessels of 100 gross tons or more
o FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit
