Are you considering a career in life insurance? Do you have a license and aren’t happy with your current organization?

You have — or will have — a valuable certification. If you haven’t been hounded by other IMOs and captive agencies, you will be. My advice to you is to take some meetings. Talk to them about what they can offer.

Then talk to me last. I’ll be on the level with you with no BS. I’ll tell you about my own experiences and put what I can offer on the table. I’m local, so if you want to meet me in person, on Oahu, let me know. It’s pretty hard to support a new agent when a manager is thousands of miles away in different time zone.

Here’s the agencies you’ll meet. Maybe this sounds familiar because you’re already part of one of those agencies.

First there’s the agency that promises free leads. Nothing in life is free and what they don’t want to talk about are low commission rates that stay that way. Maybe they’ll even charge you for those “free leads”. In many cases, you won’t even own your business. The agency owns your business and promises they’ll let you have the clients you worked to close and provided service to after years of work. How very magnanimous of them! You’ll own your business from day one and your clients are your clients with me.

Then there’s the agency that’s more a recruiting company that happens to sell insurance. You might have been with the agency for a month, but you’ll suddenly find new agents under you. That’s great! But if you’re successful those agents — the ones closing policies — will be taken back and you have to rebuild your organization all over again, after years of work. Meanwhile you’re scratching your head, wondering what just happened. Your agents are your agents with me.

Other agencies might promise you a huge commission. But the catch is, you have to buy leads. If you’re not performing, the answer is to buy more leads. They start sounding like a lead company that happens to sell insurance. Don’t want to buy their leads? That’s fine. They have a list of other lead vendors to buy from…but you might still be buying leads from that company using a different name or from a company owned by one of the senior managers. Meanwhile, those big commission checks are being eaten away by non-performing leads you’re sharing with who knows how many other agents. And if you get a chargeback, you’ll be scrambling to cover the debt. We aren’t in the business of selling leads. We are in the business of nurturing productive agents.

Maybe your agency will sit you down and tell you to write down everyone you know and their contact info. They’ll train you by talking to your friends and family — the warmest of warm markets. That’s great! They’ll even have a manager sit with you to train you in selling, all you have to do is cut them in on your commission for that privilege. Guess what? Now your friends and family are their clients now. Your family and friends are your family and friends — and I won’t charge you for my help in writing business with them.

Finally, maybe you’ve heard something about IULs and annuities. Maybe you want to get trained up and sell those advanced market products. Some agencies will make you submit client information to a group within your agency to “decide” which products are best for your client. You’ll get an illustration, some talking points but no real training in the products. When you’re asked questions by your clients, you’ll be at a loss. Or maybe your agency will only let you anywhere near IULs and annuities after you’ve been in the agency for who knows how long. We will train you in understanding IULs and annuities so you can be knowledgeable when your clients ask about them from day one. We will help you with the additional training and certifications for annuities.
