The National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) is recruiting for a Full Time Fern Lab Technician based at the Conservation and Horticulture Center in Lawai valley.
This position will be the primary point person for all operations in the Fern Lab including: receiving, preparing and sowing spores; observing and mitigating pests and pathogens; maintaining cultures, plant tagging, keeping records and following and developing protocols as needed. The person in this position will be propagating and cultivating all fern collections from spores to plants large enough for restoration, collections, and out-plantings.
Duties include: conducting experiments; developing and implementing procedures; supervising interns and volunteers; outreach and education; collaborating on academic papers and presenting at conferences.
Requirements:
Ability to work using a microscope for long periods of time
Previous lab experience preferred
Ability to work independently and unsupervised as well as with the team
Must have applicable horticultural skills for growing ferns.
Knowledge of native Hawaiian fern species preferred with background in conservation
Bachelor's Degree in biology or related field or equivalent education and experience.
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, Google docs, PowerPoint and web-based apps for record keeping and reporting
