We are a local land use planning and consulting firm based out of Hilo. We are looking to add an Environmental Planner to our team. The ideal candidate is someone with a background in environmental planning and report writing who is familiar with the State of Hawaii and the County of Hawaii land use laws and regulations.

The primary role will be to assist with obtaining permits and approvals for a wide range of land use projects. You’ll be a key member of the team, collaborating with other staff and subconsultants (i.e. engineers, archaeologists, technical experts) to prepare environmental assessments and background reports which will support the development of comprehensive land use permit applications. We are a small and collaborative firm and so we are looking for someone with a “can do” attitude who is also able to help fill in with administrative tasks as needed.

Key Qualifications

Knowledge of how to research and produce documents pertaining to a range of land use laws, regulations and environmental permitting projects

Experience with federal, state and/or local permitting and zoning regulations

Familiarity with Special Management Area rules and regulations and Best Management Practices

Familiarity with preparation of environmental assessments

Experience with environmental report writing

Degree in environmental science, planning, policy or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarly with NEPA documentation

2+ years of environmental planning experience, ideally in Hawaii

Necessary Skills

Beyond your relevant expertise, we’re looking for someone who has:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills – you are able to adjust your communication style to suit your audience and turn technical information into reader-friendly content without losing the meaning.

Strong critical thinking skills – you ask probing questions and synthesize complex information to understand the project and its context, then apply that understanding to develop environmentally sound and culturally appropriate strategies and solutions for land use and planning projects.

An eye for detail – the information you’ll handle may be dense and involve complex State and County regulations. Understanding that each project is unique, you take care to review the details of each project and applicable regulations to prepare accurate and thorough deliverables.

Pay and Benefits

This opportunity has full or part-time potential. The hourly wage starts at $20/hr, but is negotiable based on experience. We offer a 401K plan, medical insurance, paid time off and a flexible work schedule. Remote work may be possible for the right candidate after a probationary period.

To apply, please email your resume and a little bit about yourself.
