The Kohala Center (TKC)’s accountant is responsible for supporting the finance and accounting department’s day-to-day functions. The department consists of a financial controller, grants accountant, and accounts payable and receivables specialist. In addition to partnering within the department, the accountant will also work closely with managers and staff. This is a part-time position (up to 24 hours per week) with 100% employer-paid medical and dental insurance benefits, paid time off, paid holidays, and additional optional benefit programs. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Perform accounting and bookkeeping functions such as double-entry accounting (debits, credits) and reconciliations, chart of accounts, trial balance, and balance sheets.

Provide oversight and guidance on federal/state/foundation grant regulations and conditions or restrictions on expending funding to ensure organizational compliance and timely, high-quality submissions.

Collaborate on developing an effective and efficient grant management process, including integration with financial, accounting, and customer relations management software/technologies.

Meet regularly with team members to improve finance and accounting systems and processes for the department and organization as a whole.

Assist in the preparation of financial reports such as financial statements and budget performance.

Ensure compliance with applicable standards (i.e., GAAP, FASB), rules, regulations, and systems of internal control.

Aid in the implementation of new accounting policies, standards, and guidelines.

Provide accurate, timely, and relevant recording, reporting, and analysis of financial information.

Assist with annual organizational audit and other financial audits.

Prepare monthly reconciliations of accounts for audits.

Assist the financial controller in establishing a system to manage the accounting of grants (e.g., deferred revenue).

Maintain and balance subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, and reconciling transactions and resolving discrepancies.

Assist with payroll processing when needed.

Serve as backup for the AP/AR specialist.

Handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.

Work independently on routine accounting tasks as directed by the financial controller.

Prepare and make bank deposits.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, OR EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Demonstrable intermediate to advanced skills and knowledge of Microsoft Excel, as well as other MS Office applications.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate professionally, effectively, and respectfully within the finance and accounting team and across the organization.

Thorough knowledge of general ledger accounting and account reconciliation.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Two to five years of nonprofit accounting/finance experience required.

Three years of nonprofit management experience preferred.

Strong knowledge of MS Excel, Word, and a multi-fund accounting software package (such as CYMA) preferred.

Strong verbal and written communications skills required.

Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, highly professional environment required.

Must possess a high level of accuracy and be detail oriented.

Must be based on Hawai‘i Island, preferably in North Hawai‘i Island.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in an office setting.

Ability to work from home some days per week after sufficient training/onboarding.

Able to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
