The Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi is Hawaiʻi’s oldest and largest non-profit public interest law firm with offices statewide. Through its dedicated staff, Legal Aid helps ensure justice and fairness for all by providing civil legal aid to the most vulnerable in our society.

Responsibilities of this Staff Attorney position include client representation in Family Law, (including divorce, divorce modification, paternity, restraining orders, child abuse and neglect and some guardianship and adoptions), Public Assistance Benefits, Housing and Consumer Protection, Seniors Legal services, and limited Immigration. Staff Attorneys also participate in community engagement, outreach and education, statewide initiatives, and in and day–to-day oversight of non-attorney staff.

Qualifications:

 Member in good standing of the Bar of the State of Hawai‘i is preferred. Applications from highly qualified individuals sitting for the February 2024 bar exam as well as attorneys licensed to practice in another state and eligible to practice in Hawaii under Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct rule 1.16 will be considered.

 Litigation experience preferred, but not required if willing to learn and develop litigation skills.

 Experience or familiarity with family law strongly preferred. Experience in other areas of Legal Aid’s practice a plus.

 Demonstrable commitment to social justice or experience working with disadvantaged and/or low-income population and survivors of domestic abuse strongly preferred.  Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships with co-workers.  Culturally sensitive and able to work well with diverse, low-income populations.  Strong organizational skills to manage a busy litigation practice, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.

 Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.  Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.

 Strong writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail-oriented

 Basic computer skills required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), strongly preferred.  Must have valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for travel to various parts of Hawai‘i Island for home visits and court appearances.
