Assistant Technician

Position Status: Full-time; Non-Exempt

Reports To: Department Manager (or designee)

Location: Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

Organization Description:

Founded in 1998, Shrimp Improvement Systems (SIS) produces genetically improved and Specific Pathogen Free P vannamei shrimp broodstock and has initiated the breeding of P monodon and P stylirostris. The organization consists of a Nucleus Breeding Center, production tanks, hatchery and administrative buildings, and has proven to be ideal for both shrimp breeding and broodstock multiplication. Shrimp Improvement Systems is one of the leading producers of SPF vannamei in the worldwide shrimp aquaculture industry.

Job Summary:

As a key member of the organization, the Assistant Technician will play an important role in the process of providing daily care of the broodstock animals. Under the direction of the Department Manager (or desginee), the Assistant Technician will contribute to all aspects of feeding and caring for the animals that may include sorting, transfers, breeding, feeding, tagging, selecting and grow out of various species of shrimp. The Assistant Technician will ensure that the animals consistently have a clean and safe environment in order to gain optimum growth and health standards per Shrimp Improvement Systems protocols.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Perform all duties accurately and according to the department protocols, providing optimal quality and care to the animals and organization property at all times.

2. Ability to handle the animals with care as required in performing all husbandry duties.

3. Calculate and monitor feed rates and feed animals properly and according to schedule.

4. Ability to sort, selecting, and participate in the breeding and/or grow out process as assigned.

5. Monitor tank water quality and amount; adjust or clean as required; monitor parameters, and algae.

6. Conduct daily tank flushing, water exchanges and treatments.

7. Ability to work with various chemicals such as bleach or acid, following all safety protocols.

8. Assist with updating and monitoring supply inventory.

9. Perform data entry as required, keeping daily records for animal care activities and observations.

10. Assist in development and implementation of standard operating procedures as assigned.

11. Work to continuously improve operations with respect to quality, safety and inventory levels.

12. Assist in maintaining a clean environment on the campus, following all health and safety guidelines and all biosecurity protocols

13. Maintain confidentiality of company proprietary information.

14. Perform other duties as needed or directed by supervisor or manager.

Required Education and Experience:

1. Bachelors degree in agriculture, biology, marine science/biology, or other related field or other related field is preferred.

2. In lieu of a bachelors degree, consideration will be given to candidates with a high school diploma or a GED and 1 -3 years of aquaculture experience or a combination of education and experience.

3. Commitment to quality work in a fast paced environment is a must.

Preferred Education and Experience:

1. 1 -3 years of aquaculture experience is preferred but not required.

2. Good math skills.

3. Good computer and data entry skills.

Travel Requirements:

Little to no travel is expected with this position.

Physical Requirements:

1. Ability to work at least 40 hours per week; may include nights, weekends, holidays and/or on-call. Regular attendance and punctuality is essential to carry out the duties of this position.

2. Ability to lift or carry up to 70 lbs.

3. Ability to work outdoors, doing physical work in hot temperatures, often on wet and/or uneven surfaces; standing for long periods of time.

4. Working conditions may also include getting into the tanks and working in wet conditions with the animals.

5. Ability to perform fine manipulations with hands and fingers.

6. Ability to work with and around chemicals such as bleach and acid, following all safety guidelines.

All applicants will be subject to background checks, including a drug screen. If job duties require applicant to drive, a valid drivers license is required, with a clean driving record.

Relocation assistance will not be provided. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.

Part-time employees work up to 20 hours per week with no benefits except for those required by federal and state law and eligibility for 401k participation after 6 months of employment.
