The Hawaii Keiki: Healthy and Ready to Learn Program provides access to school nursing services in Hawaii public schools. The program began in 2014 with the Hawaii State Department of Education and in 2023 expanded to serve select schools within the Hawaii State Public Charter School Commission.
The program sits at the intersection of education and health to achieve student, school, and system success. The program enhances and builds school-based health services that:
- Screens for treatable health conditions;
- Provides referral to primary health care and patient centered medical home services;
- Prevents and controls communicable disease;
- and provides emergency care for illness or injury.
POSITION SUMMARY
Under minimal supervision, the Charter School Health Technician (HT) is responsible for school health tasks including providing direct clinical care, health promotion, data collection and disease surveillance, and support for health education within the assigned charter school campus. A HT also facilitates virtual visits with a Charter School Nurse Practitioner (APRN).
We have 2 positions available at the following locations:
Alakai O Kauai Charter School (Koloa)
Hours per week: 32.5; Mon-Fri 8:00am-3:00pm
Kanuikapono Charter School (Anahola)
Hours per week: 32.75; Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri 7:45am-3pm, Wed 7:45am-2pm
Pay rate: $25.00 per hour
Paid leave: Spring, fall and winter breaks according to the school calendar
This position is not scheduled to work during the summer break.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
Education/Training/Experience
Minimum:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification, or current BLS Certification
- Certification as a Nursing Assistant or have completed a Nurse Assistant program and are willing to obtain certification within six months of hire
- Experience as a CNA or MA
- Experience working in a clinical setting
Preferred:
- Certification as a Registered Medical Assistant
- Previous experience as a Hawaii Keiki Health Technician
Skills Knowledge
Minimum:
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with adult and pediatric populations
- Excellent organizational skills
- Customer service skills
- Familiarity with patient confidentiality laws (HIPAA)
- Working knowledge of vital sign measurement
- Working knowledge of wound care/First Aid
Preferred
- Knowledge of nursing procedures and techniques
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Familiarity with CLIA regulations for waived tests
- Familiarity with OSHA regulations for bloodborne pathogens
- Familiarity with Educational Confidentiality laws (FERPA)
