Description:The Department of the Secretary of State, Office of Information Services,is seeking candidates for an Information Technology Consultant. This position is advanced technical work supporting Linux servers in high availability production environments, networked storage systems, backups, networking, web-based applications, taking appropriate measures to secure them, whether located in our datacenter, alternate datacenter, or cloud-based. Responsibilities include installing, supporting, maintaining, and troubleshooting Linux servers, network equipment, backup systems and storage systems. It also includes the creation and maintenance of systems level scripts and interaction with vendors. A typical day involves:

Installing, maintaining, and updating Linux operating systems.

Developing and implementing a program of patching software, operating systems, and firmware to ensure that they remain current.

Monitoring and ensuring the smooth operation of systems.

Monitoring the day to day of our backup software and periodically performing restoration tests on a subset of the data.

Working with and advising developers on the proper integration of software with our servers.

Working with and overseeing vendors as they perform required work on systems in our datacenter.

Remaining vigilant during systems work for potential security issues, addressing findings with superiors and security staff.

Mentoring and coordinating work with less experienced Linux administrator(s) and System Security Analyst(s).

In order to be successful, you must have:

Knowledge of basic machine and high-level programming languages.

Knowledge of the principal functions of high-level operating and networking systems and related software components

Knowledge of UNIX/Linux best practices, performance measurement, and capacity planning for Linux and network operating systems

Knowledge of state-of-the-art computer, software technology, and file systems

Ability to develop technical standards and problem solve in complex high-availability technical environments

Ability to plan and oversee the work of vendors and technical subordinates

Ability to install and maintain computer operating and networking systems

Ability to research and evaluate the suitability of computer software and hardware products for a given use

Ability to adapt, enhance or modify computer operating systems and network system components

Ability to diagnose and correct program and systems failures and malfunctions

Ability to communicate, both verbal and written, clearly and effectively

Ability to configure and troubleshoot load balancers.

Ability to write and maintain shell scripts and PERL to aid in maintaining servers.

Ability to troubleshoot and configure iptables and successor tools to maintain host-based firewall rules.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A minimum of 10 years of a combination of related post-secondary education, technical certifications, or Linux, storage, network, and security technology related work experience.

Related training, internship experience etc. may be credited as related experience on a month-per-month basis.

Preference:

Preference is given to those demonstrating strong experience with Rubrik, Barracuda LB, Docker, VMWare, tomcat, Apache, IAM systems including OAUTH, OIDC, and OpenLDAP based solutions.
