Job Description: Under general supervision of Energy Plant Manager, or lead energy plant operator, cleans and assists in overhaul, maintenance and repair of all types of water treatment related equipment; May instruct and monitor other staff in general maintenance, service, and repair of water treatment equipment; Treats water in chillers, cooling towers, cooling water loops, heating water loops, boilers, domestic hot water systems and other water systems as required; Maintains and repairs chemical feed equipment and related devices; Provides work direction, training and mentoring of lower-level water treatment workers and/or other trade workers performing craft duties; Performs chemical testing, prepares reports and maintains testing records; Cleans, services, and repairs pumps, motors, water softeners, heaters, reverse osmosis, polishers and related water system equipment; May perform a variety of miscellaneous duties, (i.e., operating, cleaning, may assist in taking gauge readings, making adjustments, keeping records, and boiler/plant start-up and shut-down, helps contracted water treatment consultant take samples of all closed loops and cooling towers); Treats water in cooling towers, boilers and related water systems loops and components; Transports chemicals to site; Maintains complete records and prepares reports on tests performed, chemicals used, repairs, maintenance, and other routine duties performed; Performs any or all of the following tests: PH, TDS , Phosphate, Algae Control in cooling towers; P-Alkalinity, Sulfite, Phosphorous, TDS , Hardness, Iron in boiler; Hardness Level in softened water; Hardness, Alkalinity in Dealkalizers; Hardness, PH-Alkalinity, Sulfite, TDS , Iron in condensate; Checks/maintains Phosphonate or other treatments as necessary in closed loop system; Attends meetings on water treatment as directed; Work closely with contracted water treatment service provider and/or water treatment consultants; Maintains chemical feed equipment; Checks for proper oil levels in pumps; Performs minor repairs to chemical feed pumps, piping, valves; Advises and assists in operation and repair of other departmental equipment as needed; May be responsible for ordering or seeing that necessary chemicals, reagents, testing equipment, etc. is ordered and maintained; Responsible for maintaining the testing lab in the Heating Plant in a clean, neat, and orderly fashion; Performs other related duties as required; Adheres to all OSHA and/or Ohio University required safety guidelines; Provides work direction, training & mentoring for other water treatment workers engaged in cleaning, repair, inspection & maintenance in the heating plant facilities.Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of safety practices & procedures related to water system maintenance & repair; handling of water treatment chemicals; and testing & treatment of boiler water & water systems; Ability to carry out instructions; Ability to read, copy & record figures; Ability to read & write common vocabulary in sentence structure; Ability to add, subtract, multiply & divide whole numbers, calculate fractions, decimals & percentages; Ability to apply principles to solve practical problems; Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, and pictorial form; Ability to work independently or with others; Demonstrated willingness to work with diverse populations; Ability to lift up to 100 lbs.; Knowledge of all applicable OSHA and/or Ohio University safety guidelines and procedures; Ability to use electronic devices as directed; 48 months verifiable skilled experience in operation, maintenance & repair of water treatment technology – (i.e., handling chemicals, testing & treating boiler and cooling tower water, heating and cooling closed loops), care of reverse osmosis systems university wide & related safety practices & procedures, or equivalent; Valid Driver’s License required; Successful completion of a test may be required; Additional and/or ongoing training may be required; May be exposed to dangerous machinery; May be exposed to dirt, dust, fumes & noise; May work inside & outside and be exposed to high & low temperatures, steam, hot water, and cold water; May be exposed to hazardous chemicals; Requires safety procedures to be followed.
