The Therapeutic Learning Center is in search of a F/T ASL Paraprofessional for the 24-25 school year.

ASL Paraprofessional

Reports to: Teacher, Director

Supervises: Students

Assists teacher and service providers by performing a variety of instructional support duties to individual or small groups of preschool students encompassing a range of physical, developmental, intellectual, and communication disabilities; assists in the establishment and maintenance of appropriate classroom behavior; performs specialized language translation for students in the Special Education program who may be deaf and/or hard of hearing, who utilize American Sign Language (ASL) as the primary modality of communication; performs a routine of clerical tasks as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

● Performs specialized duties requiring the application of, and proficiency in, accepted and designated sign languages and finger spelling.

● Utilize conversational ASL to communicate with students who are dear and/or hard of hearing.

● Provide group instruction as indicated by the classroom teacher, check and correct students' work while in progress

● Provides individualized instruction based on student needs, keeping students engaged and on task.

● Implement the Teacher’s lesson plans and maintaining daily classroom schedules

● Using a variety of instructional and assessment strategies, as directed by the Teacher, to meet individual student needs

● Praise and reinforce the achievement of students, celebrate student success in all areas

● Assist with the daily collection of student data related to attendance, academic progress, IEP goals, and behavior

● Instructional Preparation/Support including, but not limited to: Preparing visual aids or communication supports, duplicating materials, laminating, reorganizing materials, distributing and collecting materials

● Assist as a substitute teacher as needed

● Assist with student hygiene and independent functioning needs including, but not limited to: toilet training and toileting assistance, diapering, dressing, handwashing, feeding, and other self-help skills

● Supporting each child’s social, emotional and intellectual growth and development

● Ensuring the wellbeing and safety of children at all times

● Assisting students with assignments or difficult concepts

● Maintaining communication with parents, staff and faculty regarding the progress of students

● Ability to observe student behavior, assess its appropriateness and apply the appropriate behavior management technique, positive redirection, or corrective action as necessary in order to support positive behavior choices.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

● Modes of sign language, finger spelling, and gestures as required by assignment such as American Sign Language (ASL)

● Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children

● Skill to make learning aids/assistive technology which will strengthen lesson plans

● Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision; independently solve minor problems

● Ability to record and store data accurately

● Excellent verbal and written communication skills

● Proven organizational and time management skills

● Ability to maintain a professional personal appearance, attitude and work behavior at all times

● Ability to work well independently and as part of a team

Suggested Training and Experience

● Graduation from high school.

● 2 year degree from a Community College

● Incumbent must be proficient in American Sign Language (ASL)

● Clear level 2 criminal background screening.

● A valid Florida Driver's license and proof of insurance.

● Certification in CPR and First Aid, kept current. (will train, if needed)
