Job Description:

We are seeking a mechanically and computationally inclined Embedded Systems and Mechanical Engineer to join our team in the construction of a semi-autonomous survey boat.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity - you will be collaborating with specialists in autonomous control systems and artificial intelligence. These are industry experts who will be providing high level direction and empowering you with significant latitude for design and implementation.

This role requires a unique blend of hands-on mechanical abilities, embedded systems expertise, and a solid understanding of electrical systems. You will be collaborating on the design and building of all aspects of the boat (including navigation, comms, sensor equipment, logging, safety, and so on).

Key Responsibilities (you don’t need to able to do all of this on day 1 but you should be excited to do all of this):

Embedded Systems Design and Integration:

Develop in Python or C for automation and control tasks (Ardupilot platform)

Design and implement an integrated management system for a variety of sensor technologies (e.g., sonar, lidar bathymetry, magnetometry, optics)

Use Git for version control and collaborative development.

Electrical Systems and Wiring:

Build and run wiring while minimizing the need for physical modifications (e.g., drilling holes).

Read and interpret electrical diagrams to design, troubleshoot, and document wiring systems.

Assist in creating detailed electrical diagrams to aid in future diagnostics.

Familiarity with deutsch style connectors

Mechanical Fabrication and Installation:

Fabricate custom brackets and supports for instruments and sensors using CAD design.

Perform basic welding tasks for durable and reliable instrument mounts.

Optionally, operate workshop equipment such as table saws, band saws, and angle grinders.

Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:

Use a multimeter for diagnostic tasks and circuit testing.

Troubleshoot and fix issues in both mechanical and electrical systems.

Solder electrical components as needed.

CAD Design and Fabrication:

Design custom mounts and brackets using CAD software for 3D printing or metal fabrication.

Required Skills:

Proficiency in Python/git for programming and automation.

Experience with Arduino programming and embedded systems development.

Strong knowledge of electrical systems, able to read and interpret electrical diagrams.

Ability to work with a breadboard, soldering iron, oscilloscope, and multimeter.

Basic welding experience for building mounts and supports.

Preferred/Bonus Skills:

Experience with C

Knowledge of TypeScript and a frontend web development framework.

Experience in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360) for designing parts and supports.

Experience in using Large Language Models (LLMs) for accelerating learning and research.

Familiarity with PyTorch for machine learning applications.

Who You Are:

You learn new topics and skills quickly and efficiently.

You are comfortable diving into any part of a big project.

You have a strong desire to innovate and contribute to cutting-edge projects in a practical and tangible way.
