This position requires a valid Class A driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department's Drivers Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

three (3) or more moving violations in the past 3 years that accumulate 3 or more points per violation;

any 2 convictions of reckless driving in the past 3 years;

a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past 3 years; and

a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past 4 years

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to; road graders, sewer cleaner, and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance. Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment.

Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew. Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees. Maintains records of operation. Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.

Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments. Performs Maintenance of Traffic (MOT).

Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.

Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic MOT. Assists with crew activity reports as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

OTHER JOB RELATED REQUIREMENTS:

Due to the nature of this position, the incumbent of this position must respond before, during, and following emergency situations. While on-duty status the position’s incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver's license (CDL). The incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety sensitive functions. A valid Class "A" CDL is required. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it. Has on-call responsibility for returning to work to handle emergency situations or other needed activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and four years of infrastructure construction or maintenance experience. An additional year of experience, for a total of five years of experience, in infrastructure construction or maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency. A valid Class "A" CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is required at time of hire.
