Job: Captain Position– 100 ton USCG license - WDP – www.wilddolphinproject.org

https://www.wilddolphinproject.org/our-research/research-vessel/

WDP is looking for a permanent captain for its 62’ power catamaran R/V Stenella. We study dolphins in the Bahamas during summer months and work offshore in Florida occasionally in our off- season (October through April). The vessel carries 6 crew (captain, first mate, cook, research director and 2 graduate students/interns), and 6 passengers for our summer trips, and our Florida Day trips may have a minimum of crew and students. Must enjoy live aboard work on the ocean for extensive time.

Start Date: March 1 2025

Full Time: 40 hours/week during non-field, with compensation time given for summer field time and any weekends worked offseason due to field schedule.

Expectations: Captain should be available all field season (May through Sept) and be available nearby until the end of the hurricane season (late November) to secure boat as needed. Captain usually preps boat the day before field trips, and day after trips for needed maintenance (with first mate help). Since boat work off-season is primarily in Florida, flexibility in schedule can be accommodated with notice. Fall/Winter/Spring – Time is semi-flexible allowing for comp time to be taken but noting that occasionally Florida coastal research days and possibly a few Bahamas winter trips are scheduled. Captain does basic maintenance on the boat at dock and coordinates/supervises haul outs and major mechanical work. Time is coordinated to reflect a reasonable maintenance schedule for coordinating engine and boat work with research needs.

Salary: Start – 64k/year, with experience and USCG 100 - ton license

Vacation: 12 days/year

Sick Days: 3 days/year

Holidays: 8 traditional, must be flexible during field season

Compensation: For full time field personnel (May through Sept, 70-90 days), weekend days given as comp days during fall, winter, spring.

Health Benefits: WDP will cover health care if needed.

Automatic Deposit: Employee can have their paychecks automatically deposited monthly.

DAN Insurance: Coverage included upon hire for all boat personnel.

403 Retirement Plan- An employee may contribute; pre-tax, to the 403 (vanguard.com) through paycheck. After a 1-year employment period, WDP will match contributions up to 3% of yearly salary.

COSTCO Membership, Dental Insurance - Available upon request.
