Hello, I am a man in my mid-30s with a significant mobility disability – I use a powered wheelchair full-time and have a 24/7 caregiver to help me with nearly all ADLs. I have a neuromuscular condition that is generally progressive and does improve with exercise. I am looking for someone to really push me and work strategically with me to make improvements to my mobility and strength – I used to be able to function pretty independently (drove a car and did personal-care on my own) and I would like to do those things again. I speak English, and a sufficient amount of Spanish and Urdu.
I have a very healthy diet and I am disciplined on my own – I have been working out 3.5-4 hours per day, 5 days per week (mix of strength training and cardio) for the past 6-8 months. I'm looking for a results-focused physical therapist who has experience with neuromuscular conditions. Most important to me right now is to work on the following skills:
Turning in bed
Sitting up in bed
Transferring to wheelchair from bed and vice versa
I have a variety of adaptive equipment (weighted bars, resistance bands, portable elevated exercise mat, wrist weights, grip aids, therapeutic putty, etc.) if needed but I imagine mostly we will be practicing these skills.
Ideal schedule: 8 AM – 10 AM 5 or 6 days per week
The ideal candidate is communicative, punctual, reliable, organized, and tech savvy. Also please note: I am very thin and get cold easily, so my place is usually fairly warm. If you prefer to work with AC all the time, this is likely not a good fit.
