Controls and Electrical Application Engineer

Job Summary: The Application Engineer designs, programs, and assists in the commissioning and troubleshooting of Energy Management Systems in a commercial environment. They serve as project manager for controls projects and manage Controls Installers to ensure successful implementation of Energy Management Systems. Utilize programming tools, standards and procedures, and their knowledge of building systems and applications, they develop program instructions for Reliable Controls DDC controllers and front-end user interface on projects.

The Application Engineer shall incorporate the United Mechanical Vision and Business Strategy by providing “Proactive World Class Service” to the markets served, based on Profitability, Credibility, Employee Base Environment, Customer Service, and Quality.

Reports to: Controls and Electrical Manager

Status: Non-Exempt

Location: Varies

Essential Functions:

Read and understand construction MEP drawings and specifications.

Read and understand control drawings, schematics, and electrical line diagrams.

Coordinate team schedule with Electrical Field Manager to meet project deadlines.

Act as primary point of contact for controls customers and Project Managers/GCs

Assist and teach all technicians and apprentices in all categories.

Act as high-level technical support for Controls team, project team and customers.

Assist with solutions to system problems, either troubleshooting the system or advise others on how to resolve problems.

Foster a productive and collaborative team relationship with the Controls Installation team.

Commission control systems with Lead Controls Installer/Controls Technician.

Monitor email alarms and determine action needed for resolution.

Assist Controls Technicians troubleshoot control system issues as needed.

Capability of successfully running any size job.

Assist Controls Technicians with programming, setup, and troubleshoot variable speed drives.

Oversee and work on multiple jobs at a time, potentially working with subcontractors.

Meet with Lead Controls Installer assigned to projects to provide comprehensive pass down of project scope and timeline.

Program Reliable Controls DDC controllers to follow engineered control sequences using established programming standards.

Design custom equipment graphics and thermographic floorplans following existing design standards using company provided graphic design software.

Produce project specific engineered control drawings using Visio for use by Controls installation team and in submittal packages for GC/Engineer approval.

Compile and submit RFIs to Engineer/GC as needed.

Produce as-builts based upon initial project construction drawings and field modification mark-ups using Visio.

Develop and maintain standard engineering solution sets and internal engineering guides.

Assist with troubleshooting networking issues as needed.

Layout job flow with Project Manager, Lead Controls Installer, and management team to assure a clean predictable job. Attend and interact during weekly progress meetings, if needed or as required by the Project Manager or the properties staff.

Direct and supervise Lead Controls Installers on assigned projects.

Manage assigned work to meet professional execution of time and client satisfaction.

Maintain a record of open items/punch list for assigned jobs and report problems or changes to project management immediately.

Clearly communicate job status to client and management.

Understand and adhere to company standards for work (graphic interface design, application design, ensure systems are installed properly, etc.)

Interface with other trades and GCs on work sites in an ethical and professional manner.

Review ECAC reports weekly (or as needed) with the Controls and Electrical Manager and address budget overages and miscodings swiftly.

Meet regularly with Lead Controls Installers and Controls and Electrical Manager to review the status of projects.

Provide periodic job inspections to ensure quality and customer satisfaction is in place.

Adhere to company and client safety standards. Provide safety awareness on work sites.

Work directly with the Controls and Electrical Manager and Corporate Safety Manager for all safety related issues.

Follow up on emails needing attention. Our response goal is same day or within 24 hours depending on the situation

Competencies:

Strong working knowledge of control system design, specifically for HVAC systems.

Strong working knowledge of BAS control components (AI, UI, DO, DI, Relays, Triacs, etc.).

Strong working knowledge and adherence of NEC (National Electric Code).

Strong working knowledge of mechanical systems sequence – ability to work with clients and engineers to develop proper sequence for systems.

Strong working knowledge of refrigerant cycle – how various pieces of equipment operate to aid in troubleshooting and conflict resolution.

Working knowledge of networking – ability to setup and troubleshoot BACnet routers and BACnet IP devices.

Developed computer and organization skills.

Excellent logistics, communication, and management skills.

Ability to multi-task.

Must be able to pass a background check.

Must have a valid Driver’s License and a clean driving record

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work: The team member must be available to work various shifts, Monday through Friday, totaling 40 hours each week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. This position is also required to work the on-call services when scheduled.

Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Site visits are often required.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is occasionally active and may require standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

This position requires the ability to occasionally lift controls equipment and materials, up to 40 pounds.

Preferred Education and Experience:

High School Degree or equivalent necessary.

Relevant industry certifications are considered an asset.

A minimum of 5 years of experience in an application engineering role in the building automation systems industry, particularly in system design, implementation, and support.

Excellent complete professional written and verbal proficiency in English

Advanced and in-depth knowledge of industry hardware and software.

Competencies in Microsoft Visio, BACnet, Modbus, multi-vendor integration and/or the Reliable Controls products would be considered an asset.

Ability and eagerness to acquire new skills and learn about Reliable Controls products.

Strong time and project management skills with the ability to stay focused and your tasks.

Ability to accurately estimate the completion of projects and strive to meet set objectives.

Strong ability to demonstrate consistently high performance when working independently.

Demonstrated skills in communication and people.
