Responsibilities include: maintaining the functionality of field and laboratory equipment, assisting in lab coordination and field equipment maintenance, overseeing shipping and receiving of samples and supplies, developing quality control and assurance protocols to ensure high quality analytical results, training technicians, undergraduates, graduate students, and visiting scientists on proper safety techniques, laboratory procedures and laboratory instrument operation. The employee is expected to implement existing research methods and modify protocols if needed based on results from research findings and the scope of the research question. The employee is also responsible for chemical inventory, maintenance of material safety data sheet (MSDS) records, and ordering laboratory supplies. They will also maintain the algae cultures.Run, maintain, and analyze data from instrumentation such as the spectrophotometer, mass spectrometer, gas chromatograph, nutrient autoanalyzer, and other lab equipment. This includes organizing, executing, and documenting the sampling of plants and animals, gas, water, and sediment samples, processing sampled materials, analyzing data using statistical methods, and adjusting methods and protocols based on research findings.Collaborates with faculty, post-doc, visiting scientists and graduate students to conduct field, and laboratory experiments through activities including, but not limited to, experimental design, protocol development, sample collection, sample processing, and sample analysis. Generate and manage data collection, entry, storage and analysis.Participate in the intellectual development of the lab for research by aiding in project design, literature search, and manuscript preparation; for extension by assisting in gathering information and preparation of printed and electronic materials; for personnel by training and mentoring temporary members of the lab.Performs other related duties as needed.Expected Salary:$47,000 annually Minimum Requirements:A master’s degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience.Preferred Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, marine science, environmental science or related field and professional experience with relevant skills.A general understanding of sediment biogeochemical processes.Applicants with field experience, including working on boats, underwater with snorkel, and in salt marshes, and experience with sediment, soil, water, seagrass, and macroalgae analyses are preferred; experience with stable isotopes is a plus.Experience in quantitative chemical analysis of nutrients and inorganic substances in water, sediment, gas and biological tissue; operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments including mass spectrometer, gas chromatograph, elemental analyzer, nutrient autoanalyzer.
