As a Power and Data Installer Apprentice, you will be learning to install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and document fiber optic, copper, and power cabling within the airport terminal and Concourse buildings, shops, and related facilities for the Airports Authority.

This is an apprentice-level job.

Serves in the Electrical Division of the Maintenance Department at Washington Dulles International Airport.

The apprentice will learn to Install, maintain, and repair wiring, conduit, and electrical components for facility build-outs and renovations while ensuring compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC) and Airports Authority standards. The apprentice's responsibilities include assisting and learning to maintain cable records, perform fiber optic and copper splicing, and test and terminate connections. The apprentice will also perform related functions.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Learns to install wiring, junction boxes, switches, outlets, power connectors, and conduits in existing facility build-outs and renovations.

Assists in performing electrical and low voltage work following the National Electric Code (NEC) and the Airports Authority Design Manual. Assist in performing work to code to pass inspection.

Learns to provide technical support and recommendations for changes in running line or construction methodologies due to environmental conditions, construction access by crews, and/or reduce congestion of utilities. Learn to maintain and archive inside and exterior cabling plant records.

Learns how the Maintenance Department supports the Airport Authority’s business locations to include, including Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Dulles Toll Road (DTR).

Learns how to determine the correct procedures for OSP fiber optic and copper splicing and ISP fiber optic and copper backbone splicing.

Learns to test and terminate fiber optic fusion splicing and copper splicing. Prepares and maintains splicing records and diagrams. Learn to recognize and repair route and handhole/manhole issues.

Learns to develop, implement, and maintain all engineering, drafting, and facilities records, work order preparation, and processing.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Have a government-issued valid Driver’s License.

Have completed and/or enrolled in a career and technical education course or technical school.

Some knowledge of tools, technical manuals, schematics, blueprints, and other equipment and guides in the trade industry.

Ability to work safely and knowledge of the safety rules, regulations, and procedures needed to do so.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Skill in using a computer, computerized work order, and time and attendance systems.

EDUCATION

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver’s license in good standing.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

Operates vehicle airside and landside (requires AOA permit).

Will operate aerial lift truck, scissor lift, and bucket trucks for use on overhead electrical systems and lighting repairs.

Work requires moderate to heavy physical exertion (including exerting 20 to 40 pounds of force or lifting objects up to 80 pounds).

May be required to bend, stoop, crouch, or work in a cramped position.

Is subject to possible electrical shocks, exposure to potentially hazardous materials, and noisy airfields. Wears personal protective equipment in accordance with NFPA 70E Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements for safe work on and near energized circuits.

Is subject to hold-over and recall on a 24-hour basis for essential services and emergencies such as snow removal.

Required to work various shifts as needed. May be required to work nights or weekends.

Work is typically reviewed in progress upon completion for quality, quantity, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
