Job Description:

The Folger Shakespeare Library, on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, is seeking an Assistant Head of Security and Safety (AHSS) to join our dedicated Security team! This individual, under the supervision of the Head of Security and Safety (HSS), will work to ensure effective safety and security operations of the Folger, including the staff, visitors, volunteers, rare materials, and properties. They will work closely with staff from across the institution on specific needs in relation to security operations and serve as the backup and second in command to the Head of Security and Safety. The AHSS will additionally assist with oversight of security staff; scheduling, training and evaluation of personnel.

The standard schedule for this role is Tuesday to Saturday, 7am to 3pm, which is a 40-hour workweek. Evenings and weekends required; additional hours as needed for events. This role is considered essential personnel and first responder in emergencies. This role is entirely on-site. The selected candidate will need to be within a commutable distance to the D.C. office (DC, MD, VA) by their start date.

As part of the DC Security Officer licensing requirements, all applicants are required to pass a thorough background check and drug screening prior to start of employment.

Compensation:

This is a monthly-paid salary position, with a pay range of $66,000-72,000 annually.

Supervisory Duties: Assists the Head of Security and Safety in the supervision of the Folger’s security force including 12 full-time Security Officers and 6-10 part-time Security Officers.

Duties:

General Duties

Assists HSS with the coordination of security for all events, exhibits, and day-to-day operations in a manner which ensures the safety of the staff and public, and the protection of the collections.

Serves as “essential personnel” in all emergencies (including severe weather events and other threats to the institution). Member of the emergency and disaster response team and other response teams as necessary.

Researches and proposes security improvements.

Staff Oversight

Primary point of contact for recruiting, hiring, and onboarding part-time and full-time security staff. Works with Human Resources to ensure a smooth process.

With HSS, plans and directs a comprehensive and ongoing training program for security staff that complies with and exceeds DC requirements for licensed security officers. Ensures officer license renewal happens in a timely manner.

Trains security staff and obtains appropriate certification (First Aid, CPR, AED) for security staff to respond to personal injuries or illnesses and reports all injuries and claims to Human Resources. Assists in the maintenance of appropriate supplies for emergencies and the First-Aid stations.

Manages security personnel scheduling to ensure proper coverage levels for various regular operations and special events. Manages timesheets and leave requests, answers questions from payroll.

Participates in performance management activities with the HSS, including reviews, performance correction, and performance planning.

Shift Supervision

As a shift supervisor, oversees day-to-day security operations for assigned shifts, including ensuring regular patrolling of buildings, reporting status of fire and safety equipment, and special attention to water leaks, equipment malfunction, security breaches, and hazardous conditions.

Ensures visitors encounter a welcoming demeanor, risks to life and property are minimized, and that the collection is safe and secure. This includes safety and security of the main building (201), Haskell Center (301), and the Folger Properties.

Conducts inspection tours to ensure compliance with all security and safety procedures and policies; Resolves problems or emergencies calmly and efficiently.

Oversees employees operating the Control Center video surveillance systems, fire alarm system and other security monitoring and access equipment; this includes checking written logs and ensuring the integrity of systems.

Ensures compliance with policies and procedures, including parking policies and building access.

Building and Life Safety

Assists the Head of Security in creating and maintaining Folger exit and emergency procedures. Helps HSS train Folger staff in emergency procedures and scheduling periodic fire/evacuation drills, and shelter-in-place drills. Provides security and safety orientation for new employees. With the coordination with the Head of Security advises senior staff of ‘best practices’ for safety.

Stays abreast of advances in the security industry and how they relate to life & property protection. Seeks out and participates in training.

Assists the Head of Security in the functions as the institutions’ lead safety enforcer, with their responsibility to carry out our safety program. Assists the Head of Security in training employees in safety and health matters, hazard surveillance and inspections, compliance with federal (e.g. OSHA, EPA, DOT) and local laws and regulations, updating and maintaining safety manuals, and maintaining documentation and correspondence.

Serves on the Safety and Security committee and reports back to all matters.

Education and Experience:

A.A. or equivalent experience required.

Must have or be able to obtain a D.C. Security Officer license within 90 days.

Certified in first Aid/CPR/AED or ability to become certified.

Minimum of 5 years progressively responsible experience in security and safety including a minimum of 2 years supervisory experience.

Demonstrated evidence of leadership and advancement in the field, with a strong preference for cultural property protection experience.

Experience with building and environmental safety, and first-aid/health administration desired.

Specialized training in supervision and museum security practices desired.

Experience in training officers required, experience with writing security policy desired.

Knowledge and Skills:

Must have strong knowledge of the security industry, knowledge of best practices of secured buildings and historic or museum environments preferred.

Written/oral communication and public relations skills are essential. Must have excellent technical/computer and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrate proficiency with property access control and video surveillances systems.

Must possess excellent computer skills, including database file management and maintenance of security systems.

Excellent communication and writing skills essential, and ability to work collaboratively with others.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:  

This job operates in a professional office environment that is currently under construction. The employee may be exposed to various components of an office environment such as florescent lighting, pollen, dust, recycled air, cooling fans, semi-enclosed areas, central heating, seasonal warmer temperatures and office noise.

During the period of construction, the employee may be exposed to loud noises, dust, and other construction elements. Personal protective devices are provided by the Folger to reduce the impact of construction elements.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  

This position is highly mobile. Candidates are required to have the ability to be on their feet for extended periods, regularly use stairs, patrol outside and inside locations, and lift items up to 20lbs.

This position is considered essential staff and is required to report onsite. The building is currently closed to the public due to construction projects but has ongoing events and plans to reopen fully to the public June 2024.

May be required to carry a phone when off duty for emergency purposes.

Position requires ability to climb stairs and ladders.

Requires calm and effective communication and response when reacting quickly to emergency situations.
