Summary The Smithsonian Institution is a diverse museum and research complex dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge. This position is located in Smithsonian Institution, Office of Protection Services. The Office of Protection Services is responsible for overseeing, a large museum/complex law enforcement and security program, and leading and providing protection throughout the Smithsonian Institution. Responsibilities The Supervisory Security Officer oversees and manages the Smithsonian Institution's security program that provides protection for all facilities controlled and managed by the Smithsonian. In this position, you will: Develop, organize, and/or direct all activities concerned with security and disaster management planning programs. Provide advice and assistance to all levels of management on technical, planning, and project personnel engaged in a range of activities pertaining to security and disaster management aspects of SI buildings to include leased facilities. Serve as the museum/complex focal point and in-house consultant with responsibility for round-the-clock protection from all hazard threats to include vandalism, terrorism, as well as other crimes and provides technical assistance in establishing and maintaining efficient security operations responsive. Requirements Conditions of Employment Requires career/career-conditional status or eligibility. Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with Selective Service. May be required to serve an 18-month probationary period for supervisors. Failure to qualify may result in removal from position. Qualifications Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position specialized experience is defined as: managing the physical security and law enforcement program for Smithsonian Facilities/Museums by 1) providing program planning, 2) overseeing policy development, 3) developing and implementing program performance metrics and 4) preparing reports and briefings on current security operational requirements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. Education There are no basic education requirements for this position. Additional Information This position is not included in the bargaining unit.
