POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

Monday-Friday

Full-time (40 hours/week)

1st Shift (7:30am- 4:00pm)

New state employees start at the minimum of the pay plan.

THE ROLE:

As a Welder, your role will p erform a variety of repairs and fabrication-related duties in conjunction Department's diverse fleet of equipment.

The Department’s fleet includes:

Class 1 through 8 vehicles

Heavy construction equipment

Complex mechanical equipment

Highway maintenance equipment

In this role, you will be expected to read and understand moderately complex diagrams, as well as the required mathematical calculations.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A residency within 30-miles of the job location.

For candidates without a CDL: As a condition of permanent employment, selected candidates must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) A or B, with "tank and airbrake endorsements," and a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) within 6-months of initial employment.

Selected candidates will be enrolled in, and expected to complete, an agency paid selected CDL training program to assist in preparation for CDL licensure. This requires a selected candidate to obtain a CDL learning permit from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

For candidates who already possess a CDL: Be sure to indicate the Type, Issuing Agency, License number, Expiration Date, and all endorsements in the "Licenses and Professional Certificates" section of your application. You will also be required to thoroughly complete the Connecticut Department of Transportation Commercial Driver Supplement (CTDOT-CDL-1) form.

Candidates who currently possess a Medical Examiner's Card (MEC), be sure to include the MEC expiration date in the ""Licenses and Professional Certificates"" section of your application form.

Interviews will be limited to candidates whose experience and training most closely meet the requirements of the position. Those applicants who hold a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), invited to interview, will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, and valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at time of interview.

As a support to Highway Operations units, various storm events will require employees to be at work prior to, during, and after a storm or weather event, which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends. Additionally, in preparation for the winter season, overtime may be required to prepare the fleet and equipment.

Must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, whenever your services are needed; to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.

Must be in compliance with the Department's Lead Health and Safety and Silica Safety Programs; (respirator physical, a current respirator fit test).

PLEASE NOTE: Prior to hire, selected candidates will be required to complete a preemployment physical and work assessment, which will include a respirator physical to be in compliance with the Department's Respirator Policy. A respirator fit test will be performed upon hire.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation (DOT) this class is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the DOT machine shop and equipment and vehicle repair trade area.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard machine shop trade practices and codes;

Performs equipment/vehicle repair fabrication, parts manufacturing, and specialized parts and equipment modifications;

Follows established quality and safety standards;

Makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks;

Performs duties related to similar trade areas as required;

Keeps necessary records;

May perform large-scale vehicle and equipment painting jobs;

May fabricate specialized road signage;

May operate heavy equipment;

May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts;

Performs related duties as required.

MACHINIST:

Operates various types of computer numeric controlled production machines in the machining of forgings made from various types of metals;

Sets up and operates lathes, shapers, planers, slotters, power saws, milling machines, drill presses and similar metal working power equipment working to close tolerances;

Uses taps, reamers, files and other hand tools;

Uses precision or standard measuring devices such as inside and outside micrometers, dial indicators, vernier scales, height stands swing gauges, air gauges, fixed frame gauges or special gauges, profilometers, etc. to check machined dimensions and surface finishes conforming to specifications;

Fashions machine parts, shafts, bearings, gears and a variety of other items of specialized machinery and equipment;

Dismantles equipment, locates source of inadequate performance and makes necessary repairs;

Operates, assembles and tests equipment, makes repairs to a wide variety of tools and other metal objects;

Uses both electric and acetylene welders in making repairs;

May do blacksmith work;

May repair builders hardware;

May act as chief mechanic on heavy, fixed equipment servicing, dismantling, overhauling, repairing and reassembling such equipment;

Performs related duties as required.

HEAVY TRUCK MECHANIC:

Diagnoses malfunctions in all types of defective automotive, mechanical and heavy mobile equipment by inspecting and testing using devises such as motor analyzers, handheld computers and chassis charts to determine how to address problems;

Services, dismantles, overhauls and reassembles front ends, engines, standard and automatic transmissions, rear ends, hydraulic systems and automotive electrical systems;

Uses different tools and equipment, such as pressure gauges, pneumatic wrenches, welding equipment, screwdrivers, hoists and jacks, to repair trucks while constantly utilizing safety precautions;

Constructs and repairs any needed parts;

Welds or brazes parts by oxyacetylene torch or electric welding;

Operates testing equipment required to diagnose automotive electronic components;

Test drives vehicles to ensure they are running properly and to identify issues and determine solution;

Performs related duties as required.

WELDER:

Tests and inspects welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws;

Plans layouts and procedures;

Determines the appropriate welding equipment or machinery to be used;

Aligns components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces;

Welds mental parts by using manual and semi-automatic welding equipment including, oxyacetylene torch and welding rods or electric welding apparatus;

Brazes parts;

Dismantles equipment and makes necessary repairs;

Assembles and tests equipment;

Maintains and repairs welding tools and equipment;

May do blacksmith work;

Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard machinist, heavy truck mechanic or welder equipment trade practices;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in the machine shop trade, auto body/equipment repair, or welding duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.

Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Intern in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General Experience.

Experience performing technical duties within the machine shop trade area, auto body/equipment repair, or welding on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General Experience on a year for year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Valid 1G/2G combo or 3G Welding Certification.

Experience in welding and metal fabrication using oxy/acetylene torches, MIG and TIG type welders.

Experience organizing, storing and locating welding tools.

Experience utilizing various measuring devices such as rulers and micrometers.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.

A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and/or environmental conditions.

The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training programs, such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class.
