The Community Coalition Builder is part of the Network and Programs team. They develop and organize local partnerships focused on addressing food insecurity and on sharing relevant information and resources more widely in communities by engaging local stakeholders. Responsibilities include community organizing, developing community coalitions focused on food insecurity, fostering communication between community coalitions, and other community engagement activities to forward Connecticut Foodshare’s mission. This position will report to the Senior Director of Network Resources.

Responsibilities:

Engage local stakeholders in addressing short and long-term solutions to hunger in their community through the development of community anti-hunger coalitions, with a focus on communities that are considered high need and where no similar group already exists. Develop organizations that ask and answer the question “Why are people hungry in this community?” Use the resources and engagement of community anti-hunger coalitions to leverage information sharing about programs that are relational to addressing food insecurity, including government food programs such as SNAP, the Summer Meals Program and other services or partnerships as identified.

Spur the formation of community-level anti-hunger coalitions (AHCs) that bring together many elements within a community (or communities), including representatives from schools, businesses, government, social services, academic research, nonprofits, and religious organizations to work together to understand the problem in their community and to find solutions that reflect their community’s circumstances.

Provide initial guidance to new AHCs with the goal of creating an independent organization in which Connecticut Foodshare is a participant and partner. Identify and connect key stakeholders, suggest organizational methods and tools, provide guidance on convening, attend first meetings if needed, etc.

Maintain effective communication with AHCs across Connecticut. Facilitate information sharing independent of and in concert with Connecticut Foodshare Network Relations Representatives so that ideas and better practices can be broadly disseminated.

Support the gathering and packaging of relevant information from Connecticut Foodshare to be shared at AHC meetings or through AHC communication channels.

Support the engagement of individuals and organizations to raise awareness of and support for Connecticut Foodshare in its short- and long-term work to end hunger.

Coordinate efforts with other Connecticut Foodshare departments (Network and Programs, Volunteer Services, Communications, Government Relations, Procurement, and Giving) to gather and share appropriate information through AHCs to support our mission and goals.

Take on additional responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in advocacy, community organizing, or related discipline preferred, or comparable work experience.

3+ years direct work experience in community organizing, coalition building, asset-based community development or similar efforts with a proven track record of strategic relationship building

Key Skills:

Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software and JotForm. Working knowledge of social media and online communication platforms (FB/IG/Zoom).

Demonstrated excellence in coalition building between organizations. The ability to think creatively and work independently to build and strengthen community ties between stakeholders.

Ability to balance priorities and to evaluate tasks and projects to see ramifications.

Ability to efficiently see efforts through to success.

Aptitude to build on momentum and channel individual and organizational enthusiasm to support community-based action on Connecticut Foodshare’s anti-hunger mission.

Capacity to thrive in environment of competing priorities and timelines through good time management, ongoing evaluation, and utilization of analytical and problem-solving skills.

Excellent listening, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate and share an inspiring and motivating vision through individual and group presentations.

Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.

Proficient using contact management system (MailChimp) software to maintain accurate contacts of AHC members.

Ability to efficiently manage communication and organization activity across a statewide geographic area.

Bi-lingual skills in Spanish and English preferred.

Commitment to food banking and Connecticut Foodshare’s mission and work to end hunger.

Flexible work schedule that includes early morning or evening meetings, and occasional weekend assignments.
